My missus dog (12 year old Yorkie) managed to dislocate her shoulder on sunday night jumping off the bed. We had her down to the Vets on Monday and they put it back in, telling us to try and make her rest it, so we put her bed on the floor in the living room, and obviously no walks.

She got on the sofa yesterday and when someone came to the door, she jumped off it and put her shoulder out again - another trip to the vet last night to put it back in.

Farrier turned up at the farm half an hour ago to shoe one of the horses and my missus had to go and meet him there. She took the dog and left her in the car. Dog decides to jump from the front seat to the back - and has done it again, so that is another trip to the vets now :rolleyes:

We are going to have to get a cage to put her in when we travel her to stop her jumping around as she has got no brains whatsoever :(
 
Ouchyyyyyyyyyyyy.. definately cage rest, almost impossible to stop dogs jumping isnt it! Sounds like you are going to have to cage rest her at home too?? What will the vets do if it keep popping out?? surgery?? x
 
She isn't in brilliant health TBH. She has colitis which she is on steroids for daily (not to sure if this has affected the joint as they did thin her coat out). The problem is that the Colitis made her very very thin as she couldn't hold anything down, and whilst she still has put weight on, there isn't a lot of muscle to protect the joint - and now at 12 years of age, doubt she will be able to gain much.

I personally don't think it fair on her to be put through what would be a fairly major op at her age :(

Awwww bless her, not nice at all!! Has she actually torn the ligament or muscle? How about ask the vet to strap it, may just give her enough stability there for it to all tighten back up and recover?
 
i freaking HATE men reffering to their OH's as missus!!!

Hope your dog gets better. I would suggest strapping it. terriers are hardy little things and ou would be surprised. plus 12 isnt really that old for a terrier.

You are going to have to be really strict and cage her at home too, for a few weeks!! Otherwise it will never recover! Just think upon it as bed rest!

Lol, I've been married to her for 23 years, so she is definitely my missus (or Mrs), and not my other half. I consider myself suitably tongue lashed for my abuse of the word ;)

They are sedating the dog and strapping it anyway. I expect I'll go and collect her after work this afternoon. A colleague is lending me a basket to get her home.

I wouldn't worry too much age wise with Terrors! My 13 yr old had his eye removed last yr and got over it like a youngster, 12 really isn't very old for that breed x
 
Strapping it should help, we had a whippet that one vet told us 100% had to have the op but as the rescue couldn't afford the cost we got a 2nd opinion and had her strapped up for 6 weeks...she didn't notice the missing limb and now she's running riot in a house full of dogs with all 4 legs working perfectly!

Because of the age of your dog how about adding a joint supplement to her diet now while the limb is restricted? It will stop her from seizing up and help the healing process, I can recommend Agility from Feedmark it's worked wonders with my oldies.

Thanks for the tip. She is a bit wrong legged but I'm sure she will adjust :)
