Got a call early this morning to say that our horses were ALL in farmers field, could we come and move them. When we got there we found the lock on the gate smashed and the gate had been opened as wide as it would go, the horses having been sent out onto the main road, which intersects with the main airport road about 200 metres away. The horses have clearly been going mental up and down the verge before ending up in a farm yard and adjoining field, hoof prints show they have been as close as 25 metres away from airport road - I didn't look any further down that that because I didn't want to know! I cannot believe how lucky we are that all 10 are safe and uninjured, not to mention that they haven't killed anybody who may have been passing in a car. I cannot believe that anyone would have been so stupid to do something like this, the results could have been catastrophic. I really don't know whether it is an attempted theft and they intended backing in a wagon or if it is just an evil act by some moron. There is of course always the possibility that it was done by someone who we may have upset in the past - I will be thinking on this one and passing on any names I can think of to the police!

That's awful. I hope that those responsible for letting them out are caught.

I'm so glad that the horses are safe after such a terrible incident.

Docle that is terrible. A friend in France had a horse killed in an RTA after she escaped onto the road. I hope you catch the ********* who did this.

I would be in favour of wiring your gate locks to the national grid. If you start a petition I will sign it!!!

I cannot believe anyone would be so stupid or so wicked, having seen reports of horses killed when they get out onto roads like this I just thank god that they are all ok, we are very, very lucky.

LOL, that is the only way they would be electrified, we haven't been able to use an energiser knowing that it would get nicked, the field is in the middle of nowhere so whoever did it has driven there. I cannot see they will be caught, although it is a busy road and I am putting appeals out on local FB to see if anyone saw anything, unlikely but worth a try.

Terrible why would someone do that?!?!? Last year two horses and a man driving his car were killed when someone let them out of their field. People have no sense at all.

I am very sorry indeed to read your post.
Could I ask you to report this incident on the www.horseaccidents.org.uk web site.
I would also suggest that you should get your gate fitted with a lock box welded to it so that no chain is involved and it is more difficult for anyone to get at the lock. It may also be worthwhile to isntall a second fence parallel to your existing fence so that you have two lines of defences.
Also contact your local rural police officers and ask them to keep a close eye on your field and horses.

Thats awful. I know the road that leads to the airport, so know exactly what you mean. Thank heavens your horses ( and public) are OK.
I hope you / police find the idiots who did this.

Thanks Peter, we have (yesterday) put in a second fence so that the horses cannot approach the gate, both gates now have strong chains and heavy padlocks (it was a heavy bicycle lock that was smashed). I have reported it but thanks, it will be worth speaking to the dedicated officers for equine issues. I will also report it on the site you suggest right now. They are all fine this morning although some are a bit stiff, the 2yo physically attacked me yesterday afternoon and she has never even nipped before so it had obviously upset her a lot. I do wonder if they were all in shock and that was why they were all so quiet when we brought them back. They were incredibly thirsty and smashed the trough fighting for water so I assume they had been out for a long time.
