Damp stable and partition ideas

Hi,

I have two stables that are slightly damp on the inside of exposed walls. I was wondering if painting the inside with bitumen paint would help? Anyone had this problem? The only thing is I would want the top half to be white, is there any water seal I could use?

Also I have a giant stable of 20 x 14 ft and am thinking of dividing it in half, either into two stables or one stable and a store room. I have had partitions priced but they are so expensive (I am in ROI) and I don't want to build anything too permanent. Does anyone use mesh gates with horses? I can get an extra high 4ft and 10ft one, and a handy friend said he could install a post for them to meet at and that was removable. If I end up turning it back into a big space I thought the gates would never go to waste anyway (I HATE waste!)

If anyone has any ideas please let me know, I really want to revamp the stables (normal people are probably saving for a holdiay!) Thanks in advance.
 
The gates do seem like a good idea but please make sure that there is no way a stray leg could possibly get trapped between the bottom of the gate and the floor. On a yard I kept my horse on I saw a horrid accident where a pony caught his leg in such a way and had to be PTS after a bad break. the space at the bottom was less than 2" but after pushing off the tempory divider when trying to get up the gap opened up and the poor ponies leg got trapped and pinned, the poor owner could do nothing.....
If your friend can possibly make a frame to go with the post this would help.
Please do not let this story put you off all together as in theory it will work and I have seen exactly this set up lots of times and done very poorly on occasions but it still worked with no problems at all.
I have a 24 ft x 12 ft stable split by a wooden partition that could be removed if needed and it has served me well for 5 yrs so far and i have a horse in each side, I will try to get a pic at the weekend in the light if this would help :O)

Oh yes please, would love to see it. That's what I was worried about with a stray leg, but I have seen them used everywhere. The frame is a good idea.

I was thinking of painting the outside too, so if I did that with a water repellent I could use normal masonry paint on the inside instead of bitumen?

I painted the outside of our stables with Sandtex masonary paint (the textured stuff) I was sceptical that it would seal the outside and stay on as the building is made from thick corrugated metal, boarded inside with wood but 5 yrs later it is still as new - I am so glad that i did not go for the cheaper option. The wood inside is painted with dark brown wood preserver on the bottom half and B&Q white standard emulsion on the top half, it was surprising how much lighter it was when the white was finished.
