Does anyone elses neds have big flakes of dead skin in the manes and tails? My youngster is a suspect sweet itch sufferer and is really flakey! He is being covered in alsorts to keep his skin soft but its a bit yukky.

get a sweet itch rug before he has no hair and bald patches!!

If you want to moisturise his skin and provide a barrier to flies apply pig oil and sulphur ..

if you need to know more just let me know

I tried every trick in the book on my old pony (around then which was a while ago I admit) and the best thing that worked was baby oil, to (a) keep the skin moist and stop it flaking and (b) she slid off everything she itched on without harming herself. the best I found was J&J Baby Oil gel with camomile, liberally every day and bring in at worst times.

pig oil (aka parrafin oil is better...its basically baby oil without the smell....and its thicker)
if you mix it will sulphur powder it will heal any unbalance in the skin and hair. sulphur is the main component of skin and hair!

I used some stuff by Leovet and it worked very well I cant remember the exact name.
I have half the bottle left if you would like to try it PM me

Sounds exactly like my new lad. I can't wait to give him a bath and get it all out - I've got the head and shoulders at the ready! I've been putting fly repellent on morning and night and he has been a lot, lot better. His mane is so dry he's been rubbing that but has stopped with the tail straight away. As soon as he is clean, I can start the moisturisation!
