Hi

My 6 year old gelding gets dandruff in his mane and tail. He does not get overly greasy/oily - its more so dry skin. It's only at the base of the skin within his mane and tail, not all over his body.
I do bathe him and have tried head & shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo. I have also tried a handful of different moisturizers on his skin but after a few days it just appears again.
It's definitely not caused by sweet itch (he doesn't have it), an allergy, poor nutrition or anything medical related, it seems to just generally be dry skin.

Does anyone have any recommendations of lotions and potions or feed supplements etc that might help?

Thank you :)

If you can get hold of it, try the Selsun medicated shampoo. It's stronger than H&S. I've been using it on my sweet itch mare and she seems to find it soothing and she definitely has less scurf (her dandruff is bloody awful, but it's hard to bathe a water phobic horse!).

Thank you, I hadn't heard of Selsun before but I will definitely try and get some of this. Glad to hear that my horse isn't the only one with this issue (although I wish they didn't have dandruff at all!) I bathe him and only a couple of days later more dandruff appears!

I’ve been using oatmeal shampoo on my grey’s mane every couple of weeks but it’s very hard to get rid of the dandruff completely. Thankfully it’s only on his mane and tail but his skin is very dark grey and his mane is blindingly white (when it’s clean) so the flecks are extremely obvious…

thank you, my horse is flaxen chestnut so it's quite obvious in his blonde mane too! is oatmeal shampoo something I can just pick up in shops?
