I have recently noticed that my horse has become very dandruffy, and has had some scabby bits appearing. I was going to give him a bath over the weekend to see if it would clear up after a good wash, but it was to cold.

Has anyone got any suggestions what it might be/how to get rid of it?

Is he moulting at the moment? Some horses, including one of mine, seem to lose a great deal of scurf along with the loose hair.

I have found feeding linseed has helped my chap a lot and a good bath followed by some serious grooming will help lift it away.

I would try bathing your horse in a skin shampoo such as Hexocil or something like that and definately feed Linseed oil. Makes my horses really shiny (along with grooming!) and they dont seem to get scurf in their coats at this time of year now.

thanks for that - he is moulting atm. I was worried he had some nasties in him

As long as the scurf hasnt got legs you are ok!!

(I have found myself peering at the odd flake and hoping its not got a life of its own!)

I gave mine a really good soapy bath using hibiscrub the other day and it cleared the scurf up beautifully - may be worth a try.

At the hunt/livery yard that I help out at, they have three horses who are always quite scurfy - One day YO joked about whether Head and Shoulders would work on a horse and we all laughed. Anyway she actually tried it and it has worked a treat!
