I try to acknowledge everyone but I'm increasingly starting to ask myself why WE,concentrating on handling a few tons of unpredictable blood and muscle have to be distracted by nodding or waving when THEY
would get done for dangerouse driving for doing the same thing in a vehicle

In a similar vein, I have all but given up taking a hand off the rein to wave (unless a driver makes a really special effort to slow down and smile, which hardly ever happens) - at risk of upsetting semi-courteous drivers, they have to make do with a nod and a smile.
Everything I ride at the moment is 5 (currently 3 x 5 year olds by chance rather than planning). The risk of me climbing through their windscreen is greatly reduces by keeping both hands on the reins at all times!!
