Dangerous idea… going to Ireland…

Planning a holiday to Ireland in November and OH suggested bringing the trailer….
Dangerous suggestion….
Say if I was to go pony shopping any suggestions/ contacts. Already have a few in mind…. Youngstock would be fine. Probably not cobs, more Connie’s and sport horses.

Hopefully we won’t bring the trailer

not the same one as I had in mind, Kevin Reilly is as common as John Smith in the UK so wouldn't be surprised if there are a few more in the horse breeding world over here either!

Yes, and they also apply to departing from Northern Ireland too.

Don't take the trailer on a whim; it costs far too much especially if you don't bring anything back - although how doubtful that is is known only to you! You also might be tempted with something because it's there rather than really wanting it after more time to think about it if you didn't have time restrictions.

We are planning the same, but not taking transport as plenty of transporters come over to the UK and are happy to deal with the paperwork!.

I'm carefully NOT opening any of those sales catalogues. Some beautiful horses in the ones that I . . . inadvertently . . . looked at.
Re transport from Ireland: I bought a four-year-old horse from N. Ireland that was a pity purchase. Had him vetted before purchasing. He came over in a wagon as part of a job lot, got off the wagon looking like a World Horse Welfare case and took about a year to get him right. Definitely worth it though.

We always take our passport and sometimes they do study it. They are more strict now, that's by ferry.

You shouldn't need your passport but if you have one you may as well take it with you.

My friend tried to fly to Ireland, last year, passport out date date, Dublin airport agreed she could fly on her driver's licence however it was the airline that refused her..'it was against their policy' so check the airline or ferry company.

Edited to add not sure why you think that for Cavan Sales in particular JBM - they are very reputable and people buy from worldwide so not a local rag and tag horse sale by any means.

All horses will be offered with a current vet cert from an approved vet that has been issued within 7 days of the upcoming sale. You are also able to have another vet exam done after purchase (on the day at your expense) if you feel that the vet cert offered by the seller has missed something. If that is the case you will not have to go ahead with the purchase and any deposit or payment already made will be refunded in full.

Most reputable sellers are more than happy for you to try a ridden horse yourself in one of the available schools on site before it goes in for bidding. The centre's terms and conditions are very strict and do offer a great deal of protection for buyers. If you are going it is well worth studying their terms and conditions, familiarise yourself with the list of approved vets and also the section on Transportes. All there on the link I posted. Usually all of the better known ones are there on the day so no problem at all with arranging transport to the UK. They know what they are doing so won't be a headache for you to get the horse back to the UK.

I have bought and sold some very good horses there in the past and have never been disappointed with either the price I got for ones I sold or the quality and price I paid for horses purchased. With one mare in particular after going in the catalogue I was contacted by a potential buyer from Scotland, they came over 3 days before the auction, rode the mare and tried pretty much anything they could want to do with her here at my place. They made an offer there and then but I turned it down as I would have been liable for Auctioneers fee's anyway. They bid on her at the sale and bought her for considerably more than they offered me beforehand. That was a very nice day, but they were happy too.

No passport needed, but photo ID (ie driving licence) may be needed for identification.
