Dangerous?

I have never met a vet yet who arrives on site to do an op with an invoice in his hand, it would be illegal to accept payment without issuing an invoice from a registered company. So register with the vets and pay a deposit if need be, but there is no need for excuses why it cant be done asap. The vet also wouldnt know prior to getting the invoice typed up how much sedative he might use or how many bits of cotton wool.

Why didn't I think of that? I'll be phoning the vet back I am registered with them but I was told I would have to pay there and then as I am a new client. I don't understand how it works to be honest. They also gave me a maximum amount of how much I would need to pay on the day.

sorry just to clarify...you don't want to get your boy gelded but as result of uncooperative...sorry quite frankly @rsey, power mad..co-liveries you now feel you HAVE to get him gelded?

firstly what would your plans for him as a stallion be? because if they are reasonable as opposed to 'I just don't want him to be gelded because he'll bleed to feath/never forgive me/etc.' then don't get him gelded. regardless it is not their place to pressurise you and deny you access to what YOU ARE PAYING FOR!

In short tell them where to stuff it and carry on as normal...and if its unbearable find somewhere else to keep him. I'll help you if you like ie. internet searching? I'm currently whiling away my time.

I was originally planning on studding him but since then between the field issues which will be sorted by the 1st of May (new field becoming available.) and him nipping my arms and legs rather painfully. I had to make a decision and it's came to him being gelded. I didn't see any other option. He will never be out with the geldings that are currently there because the owner would rather blame me than take responsibility for her not giving me suitable times for the winter field. There's also a 2 year old filly being moved up to the farm in a week or so and farmer has requested that I sort something out. When the other yard member was told that a filly was moving up she said "now the geldings will be fighting to get at her" so confused...

a few good smacks on the nose will soon sort the nipping...but if you really want to get him gelded for your own reasons other than this horrible reason that's fine. :)

The weird thing is he wouldn't dream of bitig my little girl who he was bought for and to be honest iv thought about it a lot and weighed up the pros and cons and he would be better off gelded. Yeah ok it costs money and will take me a few weeks to get that money to pay upfront but It would be best for him all round. He's a wee softy an loves nothing more than to just canter and rear and buck. So once iv saved up and he's gelded he will be happier all round. I don't think I would feel guilty about him not having balls! My other half might but I won't.

I know that guilt all too well, I had to geld my boy due to others, Id happily kept him entire, he was no trouble at all, but I swallowed it, in the long term it was so much better, its nearly been a year now, he has companionship that he didnt have before and is in with my other 2, so win win, and no more moaning :D

Good luck
PS I had to pay on the day too, it was £200odd but he was 4yo, and bled a little more than normal due to this.

there are 4 vets in my area who give a pay on the day set price according to height/age for standing castration, you pay cash at the time it is done and get a hefty discount for doing so-you cant have it both ways discount/cheap and then expect the vets to wait for payment or take the risk that they have to chase a new client.

Yeah I agree they are better with new clients to pay cash on the day which is fair enough so they aren't having to follow up for money. The good thing about the vets iv registered with the vet because they were offering to give me reminders for jags and such they have an excellent reputation and their prices are brilliant. Just as a new customer I would have liked the option to pay in 2 installments instead of all in one go.
