Dangers Of Gadgets

Do you think it helps in the recovery/prevention of theft?

Exactly. Novice people should not be using these gadgets unless they know WHY they are using them, HOW to use them and WHAT the desired outcome is. Otherwise they are wasting their time.

Why have people got the attitude that they know best cos they have had a few lessons and bought a horse and read a few magazines????? You should never be too proud to ask for help, instead of being a know it all and pretending you know what you are doing. There is a girl like that out here and just cos daddy as bought her everything under the sun including 7 german horses, she thinks she knows best and has recently been brought down a peg or 10, not something she enjoyed but it needed to be done.

Original post said "THIS IS SCARY" that they would tie 2 lead ropes together, and that it would ruin a horse...I fail to see how it warrants a mention let alone the use of capital letters.

Two lead ropes tied together can come apart fairly easily. Then you have a loose horse. Either in the school with somone else or loose in a field fully tacked up. Also standard lead ropes arent very long so you end up on a 10m circle. Not ideal for you horse either,

Yes and you can drop a lunge line leaving you with very much the same situation. If it were that much of a welfare issue they would make lunge lines with loops...

Finn - she is a big pain in the bum and was on a yard where I kept one of my horses and had the same trainer and she irritated the hell out of me - "I ahve bought a new PASSIER saddle and it WAS €2500" "its better than your one" "My father bought me a lorry" "we are building a million euro house in coin with a pista" And it just went on and on, I work hard for a living and everything bought is from MY money or our little ebay shop profits, so she got told one day that it wasn't necessarily how much something cost and at least I can ride my horses!

She then moved onto a Spanish yard with an in house trainer (one of best in Spain) and he has banned her from embarrasing him at competitions even in lower levels until she can ride properly and has a better attitude to others!!! LOL!!!

But she is still saying that the reason she wasn't at the first local league show a couple of weeks ago was because there was no point in going to such a SMALL competition. (Bearing in mind, some of us are really very good riders with fab horses)

Excellent!

I guess on the plus side she is sticking with this trainer, who is obviously instilling some sense in to her - hopefully

Rather than just moving on?!

How can anyone selling gadgets know the ability of the buyer? Alot of gadgets used are bought because many people aren't prepared to spend the time or have the patience to school a horse correctly to get him moving right.

It's all quick fix, which never lasts, & wonder why various problems keep recuring. Then it's all blamed on the feeding or the bit rather than very poor schooling....sorry a bit of a rant but why can't people take their time & sort things properly.

Doesn't stop everyone from wanting to slap her!! LOL!! She will never change as long as daddy tells her she has the best horses in Andalucia and the only reason she doesn't win is cos shes not spanish. (Neither am I but I was Champion of Malaga Last year!!)

That is something that we have over looked really the need for proper schooling is most important.
Though the correct use of gadgets can help you build this up!

here here. I must admit that's one area that I do go off on a rant!

It's one thing for someone getting to grips with riding/training to make innocent mistakes, but a very different subject to corner cutting as a means to pot hunting GRRRRR

Sorry - but Toby started it!!!!

I agree with the poster's point of view but I can't see every tack shop doing interviews with their customers

As someone said though a proper instruction, even in a form of a book, sold with the gadget would be great! It wouldn't solve a problem of a misuse but maybe it would at least make people aware of how complicated it actually is to use one properly...

I know where you are coming from, it annoys me no end to see people using draw reins to replace a stable lower leg or lunging for hours in a pessoa on so loose it is a wonder the horse doesn't fall over it.

But since pretty much forever, people have used gadgets to make horses look better/learn faster etc etc. Look at dumb jockeys used for backing youngsters and bearing reins for carriage horses. They've gone out of fashion now (thank god) but i think people will also want to get the 'look' of a beautifully trained, perfectly ridden dressage horse without going to the trouble of learning to ride correctly.

And then when they see the experts using gadgets (legitimately) they think they are good enough to use them as well. Very few people are humble enough to admit they don't know enough to make their pony look good.

I don't think asking people to take 'classes' in using gadgets will help other than to add an 'I am experienced and fully trained rider' label to anyone seen using one. Which will make people more likely to use them as a status thing.

Perhaps the point is the taboo needs to be lifted?
What's that annying managment phrase , um enlightenment through eudcation or something similar?
If you mentio gadget all you get is the arggh can't use them comments.
Perhaps if ther were demos on them and how to use them correctly and what they are/aren't effective for sorting out people would understand them more and they could end up being used more correctly and less often as a result?

The don't mention draw reins mentality that we have now certainly isn't helping.

Just a thought.

Yeah I agree.

I think also that sometimes correct explanation of how and why to use a gadget can help explain how and why a horse should go correctly, and what the purpose is.

I only just feel like I am beginning to understand what is correct and incorrect (and would add I don't actually use any gadgets others than I lunge with 2 lines), but my friend lunges in a Pessoa and it does help to watch a horse moving and working through it's back without a rider.

Lots of people shout about correct and incorrect, but few actually seem to be able to put it into words.

The more debate and explanations that come in about a horse's way of going, the quicker we all learn, and if talking about gadgets causes the penny to drop for some, then I'm all for it.
