Bone spavin with sore-ish back. (3/10 and 2/10 lame).

1. Is it better to give one sachet every other day or half a sachet a day?

2. Is such a low doseage not worth it?

3. Is it better to give it overnight or an hour or two before riding?

Thanks

I've been told to go down to 1/2 a sachet a day before and it has been useful. I suppose it depends on the size and weight of your horse and the extent of the pain. As to your third question, I imagine it works like aspirin as it is an NSAID, but I'm not a vet. I would be guided by the advice of your vet, especially as it is a prescription drug.
My horse has spavins and I have found physio, massage exercises that I do myself and her equilibrium massage pad very helpful for her back pad very helpful in order to avoid giving bute.

Half a sachet is worth it. My arthritic 16 tb mare was kept comfortable on this amount. Personally I think that giving half a day is better than one every other day as it "tops up" the amount in the system more frequently than giving one sachet on alternate days. A stronger dose doesn't last longer and I would worry about it wearing off before the next dose.

I would speak to your vet about the best time to give it.

My vet said half per day is better than 1 every other - better for the liver.

I asked how long to get into the system and he said 30-90 minutes depending on contents of the stomach. When my horse was getting 1.5 sachets per day he told me to feed the 1 sachet at night when he was moving around more (turned out overnight) and half in the morning, when he came in. ATM he gets half in the morning and half at night.

And yes, I think it is worth it though I'd be tempted to give a bit more to start with if the horse is 3/10 lame... talk to your vet though.

For my mare's lameness, my vet said 1 Danillon a day was enough to act as an anti inflamitory but not completely take the pain away ( 16.1 Dutch warmblood, weight approx 600kgs) as she was on paddock rest and not box rest.

I am happy to give my mare 1 Danillon a day for as long as she needs it and even up it to 2 on occasions. I would rather have my mare comfortable on a powder a day than worry about long term liver damage of which the percentage of that happening is fairly low. (unless your horse is one of the smaller breeds.)

My elderly 27 yo arthritic mare is on 1 sachet daily and has been for the last few years, i get her lft done every year, and her liver is still good, i also use magnet rugs and boots which i think helps, she bounces out to the field every morning, if she doesnt get it, i start to notice a change in her well being, she gets slower and stiffer, so i will continue to use it as long as it keeps her comfy and in good spirits
