Does anyone use this long term and if so is there a cheaper way to buy it than from the vet.

I am looking into the future when merlins insurance runs out and i may need to buy it myself.....

I have my old pony at the minute and she has been on it since November/December last year. She will be on it indefinitely due to her health problems.
Ive just checked my vet bill and we got charged £18.68 for 30 sachets of danilon. Normally I get a box of 60 every month as shes having 1 1/2 sachets a day.
I did find somewhere on the internet that was selling it - ill go have a look for you

I could use either I suppose, and I know that bute is cheaper but I believe Danilon is more gentle on the digestive tract, and as he is young I dont want the side effects that long term bute use has. Although to be realistic if he needs it long term the vet said that the arthritis will get him before the bute does!

Also it is what the vet gave me today!!!!

I've not found it much cheaper online, maybe a couple of pounds cheaper, but not really worth getting the prescription etc. I pay about £33 for 60.

LL - mine has decided she wont eat bute. I got a box full from the vet and ended up taking it back as I was wasting it as she refused to eat. I swapped it for Danilon as its bute coated in sugar and she eats it with no problems.

Ive also found that my other girls are picky when it comes to bute but again will eat danilon, so I might as well have danilon in insted of bute. Also it isnt really that much more expensive.

Thanks Looby-lou, is there a reason for chosing bute???

and no I have not looked into any other stuff yet... merlin has managed without the drugs since diagnosis last year, but the vet today has put him back on it to see if he improves movement by next wed.... so may not stay on it, not really sure yet. he is on cortaflex though.

Bute?
1) I think i am pretty much a traditionalist..
2) and as your vet said.. the arti will get em before the the bute does..
3)and danilon is no nicer on the gut once the sugar coating has diappear.
4) i can't afford to feed danilon.
5) ted will eat bute out of my hand.

There are alot of thing son the market now.. No but is quite cheap and is excellent, we had a cracking result with one of the college horses hwo is artheritic.. he was full of life on the no-bute.

Perhaps those of you that are in the know could explain why (or if) Danilon is better/more expensive than Bute.

I just go with the vet at the moment as its all under the insurance... everyone else on the yard uses Bute though!!

what you get it sent out to you? Maybe im lucky as there is a vet centre near me so I go and collect it when I am passing.
I think you would be best buying it from that link i posted rather than your vets if that is how much they are going to charge you.

Lucky or not (with the situation of the pony) but her danilon is being claimed on the insurance at the minute. She wont be around after September so we wont have to pay for the danilon after that.

the only reason i have been given ever for using danolin is that it is sugar coats (hense the lumonous colour) and therefore is sweet and fussy feeders will eat it.

Oh thats so sad.... what is wrong with her :-(

I think i will ask in future to have a script to get my own, I dont like being ripped off!! Dont mind paying postage as its no more expensive than driving ages to collect.. but not to pay loads more for the danilon....

Do you have a link for bute as well, i cant find it on the site (cant remember the long name for it)

Thankies

i suppose.. in my head.. this is..
It is probably more gentle on the stomach in the sense that it is sugar coated, but as soon as the sugar coating disappears it would then be no nicer than bute.

obviously i am not a vet.

shes got arthritic changes in both her stifles and hocks. Her left stifle is worse than the right. Shes had all the treatment she can have that might work - cortisone injections and synthetic joint fluid but they havent worked. My vet doesnt see that there is any point in giving her anymore treatment as there is nothing that can be done for her.
I discussed the fact that high doseage of danilon/bute can cause liver damage and he said exactly what I have been thinking since March - what is wrong with her being comfortable and pain free, even if it is going to cause slight liver damage as unfortunately she is going to PTS by September anyway as there is no way she will be able to cope with another winter.

by the way bute = equipalazone

I use Danilon because he won't touch bute
smirk.gif
. I think its gentler on their stomach

because the bits stays in its casing until its passed their stomach. Can't remember exactly what the vet said, but basically it was much more reccomended to use Danilon for long term use, than bute. It is either 5p or 10p more a sachet, can't remember which lol. I read (on here I think) that Danilon has been proved better at "treating" lameness than bute, no idea what the evidence for that is though

thats what I said and the vet said the same. Shell never ever be ridden again but to see her move around the field at a bit faster than walk when my mare is whizzing around it gallop would be nice. She lives with my mare Ebi who is her soul mate. They have lived together for 10 years and they cant bear to be apart - dont know how Ebi will take it.
I have said to my mum that when the time comes my other girls (2 of them) are going to go and join them and live out with her and Ebi for a few days/weeks as they are going to be there when she is PTS so they can grieve for her and not spend time searching for her - shes been a big part of all of my other girls lives. I will double her dose of pain killers so she can enjoy them being out for the last couple of weeks then obvioulsy the day will come and she can have as much pain killers as she wants that day with as much food as she can eat!

You ar right about the phenylbutazone but its under equipalazone podwer on that site?

it is but shes 19 and one of those been there done it got the tee shirt kinda ponies. She deserves everything she needs and if thats lots of bute/danilon then so be it!

It is a rip off from your vets - mine works out at about 62p per sachet from the vets so it isnt too bad really - thats nearly £1 a day for her as shes on min 1 1/2 sachets a day
blush.gif
But I do think a lot of vets think horse owners are made of money either that of they think its always an insurance claim.

You might find it cheaper than 59p on the web, from my vet its 55p and I'm sure I found it slightly cheaper than that.

My horse has been on it for the last 18 months and will be on it for the rest of his life due to having a crooked foreleg and arthritic knee

It isn't actually that expensive. I get a big oblong box of 60 sachets (I think it's 60) from my vet and it costs around £38 per box. He's generally on 1 sachet a day, so it's quite cheap really.

I use Danilon. My vet said bute acts as a mild steroid and can make laminitis worse.......? Don't know if I misheard or just made that up, but if it is the case then it's good enough fopr me.

They are roughly the same price if you get them on the internet. You do need a prescription, which you print out from the site and get your vet to sign. It is now illegal for vets to charge you for signing prescriptions

Danilon is 50p a sachet
Pro Dynam Bute is 43p
Equipalazone Powder is 68p
