My boy is a 7 year old Dapple Grey Connemara. He has steel, almost black, coloured legs and a heavily dappled coat with grey mane and tail.
I thought that being 7 yrs old he wouldn't change in colouring too much more now but several people down my yard have said that he will be fully grey in no time! Not that I mind whatever colour he is but does anyone know if that will definately happen?

Thanks in advance

Rhi

My dapple grey was quite dark when I bought him, he was 7 and for ages I thought I was lucky but in the last year or two (he is 13 now) he has really changed coat and he is now more fleabitten grey but still with dark legs and ears.
I'm sure the sun bleached his coat last year as well, I remember getting quite cross about that.lol

yep 'fraid so. he'll be white as white can be in a couple of years. better stock up on stain away now!

Yep my boy was dappled with black points and mane and tail but is now pure white and my mare still has some dapples on her bottom but would have been heavily dappled with black points/mane/tail when she was younger too...!

Oh dear! I thought I had it bad now with mud and poo stains but I suppose in a few years time it will be terrible!
He just wont be allowed out haha - or I will have to cover him head to toe so he doesn't get dirty - i've never known anything like it! (This is my first "light" coloured horse - i've had dark bays before him)

Has anyone tried that dry shampoo that they do? Apparently it's great for winter when you don't want to get your horse wet/cold - it's quite expensive to just try out though so if anyone has any feedback on it then please let me know!

Thanks

Rhi

'Fraid so. He'll get a tiny bit (or maybe a lot) lighter with each moult. It could take just a couple of years or it could take many - they all change at different speeds, but inevitably he will lose his dapples eventually.

I know, it's such a shame! I've got a lovely dappled gelding at the moment and he's such a beautiful colour now, rose dappled with black mane/tail, but I know that one day he'll be white like his mum.

Our mare was iron grey when we bought her as a 6yo; she's now rising 10 and has a white head and most of her body, with dark dapples on her quarters, parts of her neck and forearms. Her lovely black legs are going greyer too - they used to be the only bit I didn't need to wash! I was dreading her going lighter having already had 2 greys (I know, I know!) but it is quite nice to see how they look pretty in different ways as her colour changes.

Cowboy magic stain remover spray, wiped off with a warm flannel gets stains off a winter coat well enough to go for a lesson or showjumping etc, but if going any where smart I'm afraid it has to be a bath regardless of the weather!

A thrermatex is a must for greys I reckon cos they dry off so much quicker with one on and stay warm too.

Ive got a beautiful 3yo steel grey and its such a shame to think her coat will eventually be grey :-( not that its her coat colour that matters but she does look pretty as she is!

On my vanner I dread the winter he is an absolute mud magnet! I put him in a rug even tho he doesnt need one just to keep his body clean mud & full feathers definatly dont mix! I have tried the dry shampoo's and altough they work its a pain in the backside having to do it all the time lol

He will go paler eventually but who knows how long it will take? My friend has a lovely irish sport horse who was almost black when she first bought him (as a foal) he is now 12 and is a lovely iron grey all over so still quite dark. SO your boy may be dark for a few years yet!

My girl was dark dapple grey when I bought her as a 6 yo she's now 12 and white with dark grey on her hocks and back of bum and flea bitten in places !

Can't remember which i used as it wasn't mine but borrowed dry shampoo spray once or twice a couple of years back when i shared a grey- for those days when they make you want to cry when they come in green! Mud brushes off ok, it's the grass you have to worry about

Anyways whichever one it was, it worked really well! Was probably an expensive one tbh but worth it- just not for every day. If i had a grey again i'd buy some for when you're going on a hack and don't want to look like an absolute gypsy!

Agree with all the others!! But you will never really know what colour he is due to the large amount of mud he will always be wearing!!

To keep on top of mine I use a slosh wash all year round - its keeps on top of the worst of the mud and stains and the oils in it (smells yummy!) seem to stop it from sticking as much.

Sorry - you will have a white horse soon. My connie has gone from being the chestnut foal that I bought, through strawberry roan, iron grey, dapple grey and now white.

Never used dry shampoo but I have used lots (!) of Cowboy Magic Yellowout. You can also get a spot stain remover that comes in a trigger spray. Can't remember the make but it is dark purple when you spray it on and then you wash it out after a short time.

My girl was very dappled when i got her agad 3,now she is 19 and totally "flea bitten" or freckled as i prefer.I use 7 day mud away by net tex once a week and the mud/grass/stable stains just brush off.Wish it had been available when i was showing!
