never had a grey but our new horse was born black, then was iron grey, now dapple grey and is 12.is it normal for greys to change as they age and if so is she likely to lose her dapples as i love them
My 4yr old was jet black as a foal. When she changed her coat as a yearling she had a few grey flecks which have got more prominent with each change of coat, she's now iron grey with a 'badger' tail.
Her sister was born dapple grey, she's now 8 and is getting 'whiter' as she gets older. Her dapples are much less prominent now.
A mare which is kept locally to us was patched grey and white when I first knew her, about fifteen years ago. She is now white and you cannot see the patches at all. Sorry!
yep sure is. my mare was born jet black with a star and over the years the star has covered her face and body lol. shes 15 now and although she isnt completely white yet shes getting that was. she has kept dark ish legs and some dapples.
her daughter was also born jet black, now shes 3 this year and shes slowly turning grey already.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news
My boy is grey with a white mane and tail (grey stripe in the middle) and has dappled legs - in his passport he is described as steel grey all over including mane and tail......he is 12! The only thing still the same in his passport is his four black hooves.
Afraid they do fade - my Arab (see avatar) was a 'rose grey' (almost strawberry roan) when I bought him rising 4; he faded over the next few years to dapple grey, and now (aged 10) he's white from head to ribs, and dappled only on his quarters.
Yep, really annoyed too. All the Baby P's are going lighter... shame as Tim was a really nice steel/almost black grey but he's getting lighter by the day.... Jake was solid grey but is no a light dappled. Scroogie went from rose grey to white with a few dapples on the end of his bum within 2 years! Unfortunatly it's part Percheron breeding....
This is what people keep saying to me too that he will lose his colour - my boy is roan grey, and every summer he goes brown/sort of almost palomino in parts, and then in the winter back to iron grey. i haven't noticed that he is much lighter - and he is now 8.
My horse was dappled and is now flea bitten at the front and there are a few dapples left above his hocks. I loved his dapples, but they have grown out. His mane and tail are white and he looked stunning dappled. He is now stunning flea bitten.

ah, but if he IS actually roan, he won't necessarily go lighter. Only if he is grey.
You would not believe the number of Goldies and Black Magic's I have known who are as white as the driven snow ......
my girl is steel greyat 3yo, where we had her clipped her skin is like a roan colour, not grey or black, will she remain steel grey then?
Love the colour that she is and dont like the thought of her slowly fading out to white
Her summer coat is coming through alot lighter but keeping everything crossed it comes back much darker in the winter, although would love her no matter her colour lol
