Hi,
Here's hoping someone can identify what is coming out of our 27yr old boy.
He has been given the summer but will not last another winter, so is due to be pts late summer and that is right for him.
However, this last week I have been finding what looks like dried putty in urine stains, this morning I went to turn out the old boy and there in a urine stain was fresh putty coloured stuff, probably the same consistancy of yoghurt, as the week has gone on it seems to be getting darker,no blood just this odd coloured splodge.
Anyone had anything like it

Horses excrete a small amount of protein in their urine which is why it appears cloudy, particularly when concentrated. It is called sediment. Possibly your boys kidneys are not functioning properly and leaking alot of protein into the urine which looks like sludge. Also it possible could be pus from what you have described but if that was the case I would expect him to have discharge all the time and a messy willy! To put your mind at rest you could try and catch some urine into a clean container and take it to your vets to do a dip stick test on. It may be that the extra sediment is only excreted at the beginning or end of urination so try and catch the whole lot if you can, mix it and take a representative sample.

I am sorry to hear that your old old boy will not get through another Winter, but know that all good owners know what is best for their beloved horses .....

I would not worry about the putty/cream coloured 'wee', as Motor has been like this for quite a while and he is now 29. In fact yesterday I noticed it stuck to his foot, where he had trod on the wee'd on shavings and found it was, as you say, the consistency of putty ..... very strange, but I am sure it is nothing to worry about and from someone like me, who worries for England about Motor, that is an unusual thing to admit.

I have noticed over the last couple of years, white wee patches in his wood barked paddock ..... I think it is just a kind of sediment, as I see it when my TB has a wee and the urine looks like shaken up thick orange juice .... I asked my Vet about this once (and I trust her with both my horse's lives) and she said it was quite normal.

It would be interesting to see what other say though.

I would disagree with the above - horses' urine does not normally contain protein. The cloudiness is due to the presence of calcium in the urine. If your horse is receiving a large quantity of high calcium feed e.g. Alfalfa then this could make this more obvious as it gets excreted through the urine.

Ultimately if he is not showing any signs of pain or discomfort when he urinates I wouldn't worry too much given his age and the decision you have already made regarding his future. For peace of mind and to rule out the possibility of infection or bladder stones you could ask your vet to check a urine sample, but I would expect him to be straining/uncomfortable if this were the case.

Thanks for all your replies
Quick update, the old boy is fit and well with no further sign of
the sediment, I just wish he didn't look like a bag of bones, all
summer it has been a battle to keep weight on him, which according
to the vet is down to old age, he's 29

Thanks again for your advice
