Last night noticed my new mares wee was a darker colour than what id expect. (from others horses wee!) The light was fading, but me and friend both commented about the wee looking dark.

So what could it be? Is it anything to worry about. BTW she is 2 months pregnant too, if this affects anything?

Thanks.

i'm no expert on wee function and my first thought was that your mare was in season, but as she is in foal then that is not likely the reason for it.It could just be hormonal changes I guess.I know that in horses that suffer azoturia the urine goes darker. If I recall rightly its to do with protein in the urine.

Longshot as not expert on horse wee, but in humans it is signs of dehydration - maybe monitor her water intake??

Thanks will monitor over the next few days see if anything is amiss.

It could be related to the pregnancy i suppose, she has been showing signs of being in season since the first scan, thoughout.

I think there is some evidence that horses who have automatic water drinkers drink less, so if this applies, giving her a couple of buckets too might encourage her to drink more.
It could be a sign of azoturia, too, but that is usually linked to excess feeding, and if she's a broodmare, I'm guessing you aren't going to give her much feed til after Christmas.
Hope she is ok.
