I recently bought the boxset of this lovely series and was interested in the interviews with Pam Ferris and Phillip Franks..Phillip said that during the filming of the gymkhana in the 1st episode that Katherine Zeta-Jones had a very nasty accident after her horse bolted and after hanging on for dear life the horse bolted right up to where the cameras were and stopped...poor Katherine fell heavily and to the horror of the crew was knocked clean out?? worried crew put her into the recovery posistion before being sent to hospital..were a dislocated shoulder was strapped up...It was indeed a close call ,and Katherine could have very well been killed..aparantly,Katherine told the Director that she only had minimum riding experience and was happy to do the non jumping shots...a double was brought in for the showjumping scenes..as the light was fading the director really wanted a few last shots of Katherine before winding up the days filming...the horse that Katherine was to mount was playing up and Katherine expressed her concerns and was said to be not keen on mounting the horse...the rest was history as her intuition was right...Phillip Franks also paid tribute to Roy Kinnear who died after a hore accident while filming a few years before...On watching the 1st episode again I notice that Katherine is wearing a top hat or bowler hat and this would have offered little protection when she fell from the horse..perhaps the Television indusrty should learn from this near miss and insist on actors wearing the standard riding hat and update their health and safety rules for actors who are involved in horse riding scenes...anything less would simply be not Perfick

So what do the directors do with scenes such as those in Alexander?

Where it is Roman scenes or similar?

I do think the industry has to be responsible to an extent but it falls to the actors/actresses to ensure their own safety as well.

The incident involving CZ-J does sound irresponsible & dangerous though, I agree.

But DBOM isnt a recent tv series is it?? It was made in the 1980's/ 1990's.... back in the days when most riders didnt wear chinstraps.

It wouldnt be allowed today, so what is your point?

The programme was meant to be in the '50's wasn't it? No chinstraps or even real safety hats then. I know it's no excuse for not having hats on but these things do tend to try and be authentic to the era.

every one was pleased that Katherine was not too badly injured it must have really shaken her up..it was one of those things the director said it would only take a few minutes to get the final shots in the can..if you watch the next episodes Katherine has her arm bandaged in a support
