Hi everyone,

Got to the field tonight in howling wind/rain to find the tarp had blown off my big bale of hay :( Question is - what should I do with it..? I was hoping the bale would last me another 3 weeks but the outside layer is all soggy - yuk! Should I pull the wet stuff off & give them an all you can eat buffet over next couple of days..? Or will it keep for a bit without going stinky..? Will the stuff underneath be OK - think it's just the outside flaps that caught the rain.

It was pitch black when I was trying to sort it out tonight so have just covered it back up for now and scooped up the loose bits into builders bags to feed over the weekend. Am hoping I don't have to bin too much of it but don't want to poison the horses either :)

Thanks for your help!

P.S. Have now put pallets all over it so bungees can't pop off in the wind again - lesson learnt :)

Can you pull off most of the wet stuff and put it in hay nets to feed in the next few days? Agree with pp as well, as long as its ventilated it will be fine, don't put a plastic tarp over it!

Keep it covered when it is raining but when there is a drying spell, take the tarp off and let it dry out. Put is back on if you have to leave it or if it rains! You'll be surprised how quickly it dries out.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Hadn't thought about just drying it out :) Will have a look at it in daylight and see how much I need to pull off! Meantime I'm being very generous with the damp bits - the horses think Christmas has come early :D
