Hi, I would really appreciate it if anyone could inform me of any information about the Dartmoorhill pony sales in Chagford on the 19th June. Last year my friend bought an amazing pony from these sales and i am thinking of getting one for myself. How and where do i find information on this?, thanks Vicki

what sort of information do you want? you already seem to know when and where the sales are.... :)

do a search for chagford sales, it should come up with the listing of what is going through. Good luck. I have two dartmoor hill ponies and they are the best.

Just because you got one good pony from these sales doesn't mean another will be good.
These are mongrels and can turn out any way.

It's a pity they can't all be rounded up and prevented from breeding. IMO.

There are far too many unwanted foals being produced.

s4sugar your are right, there are too many foals being born, but not just by the hill ponies. I have a yearling that came from a breeder, they breed 30 plus a year. I have been told by them that they really can not afford to feed them. They used to be sold for around the £5000 mark, now they are going for one five. They are very well breed warmbloods. I was when i went to pick him up he was so thin, so whilst the hill ponies are mongrals as you put it, at least the farmers have the grazing for them unlike some breeders. horses and ponies are only as good as the amount of time and work which you put into them, no matter what breed they are or where they come from. This is not knocking breeders most are very good.

There are other foals there other than hill ponies, i bought a reg dartmoor from the hill pony sales that is now in germany being used as a stallion for a big stud. OP didnt state what she was actually after. If she wants a companion then whats the harm?? They could be rounded up and prevented from breeding but they are the only animal that keeps dartmoor as it is so breeding in small numbers is encouraged.

Ive got two brilliant dartmoor hill ponies that we bought off someone who bought 60 of them from a sale, they came to us completely unhandled but are making lovely good natured ponies, they're 18mths old and brilliant with kids. Couldn't ask for a better "mongrel" !
