I am considering a smallish type dog and I have always loved the look of this breed, but know relatively little about them in terms of temperament & what sort of home suits them.

Can anyone enlighten me?

My main trouble is cats (I have 2), and the fact that I work 5 days a week (although I can take a dog to work with me).

Thank you

Never had one but a close friend has always had wire-haired dachshunds and I've dog-sitted for her a number of times, for a few weeks at a time.
Her current one is absolutely adorable, most affectionate dog ever, got really attached to me fairly soon, got attached to my OH equally soon, and was totally fine with my other three dogs (including two big ones!) when he stayed with us last Christmas (see bottom picture - helping OH work with my IG puppy)
Fantastic character, lovely dogs

I know a girl who has short-haired one - he's the happiest little chap in the world, sort of reminds me of a Border Terrier but without the bounce! She has a couple of cats and a guinea pig and he's happy being with all of them. She had a problem with him mouthing to start off with - but he was a rescue case and I think it was probably more a reflection of his past than the breed in general.

In short: I like 'em, not heard horrendously anything bad about them!

I'd really like one, I understand they are great hunters and can be wayward if you do not give them proper training in the early days. Very game little dogs. I had a friend who's 2 daxies went with her when she rode her horses. They kept up with no problem. Sadly one disappeared down a rabbit hole, never to be seen again.

My MIL has two, a wire haired, lots of personality but narky bugger with other dogs, and a long haired, no personality and narky with dogs and kids! They are the only two minis I've ever met, but I have met a couple of standard wires, they were lovely!
