***Daughter and Dolly - the good, the bad and the costly...***

I know what you mean about keeping them on smaller ponys till they have to move on.
My daughter has recently gone from a very naughty 12hh sec a, who she had a bad accident on earlier in the year.

After much debating about wether to get her a 13.2 or bigger we decided on going straight for a 14.2.

After seeing her on the 12hh for so long it was really strange seeing her on bigger.

Well your daughter takes the gutsiest miniHHO'er of the week! Great result for the area qualifiers too.

Sorry about fall but doesn't sound as bad as you thought which is positive! Hope the lovely Dolly is ok (maybe silly bint hurt herself putting in humoungous stop?)

Looking forward to area's report too :D

Awww thank you!! She put a lovely round in! What is obvious though is that it's the showing side of things that needs work! :p

Hi Old Bat! Daughter is aching a bit (was ok yesterday so perhaps it's taken a few days to "come out") and Dolly is still lame, although a little better than yesterday. We're going to keep her on box rest until weekend and then assess her then. If she's still not 100% I'm going to get the vet out then. Thanks for your kind words, yes, they're always up to no good aren't they!! :rolleyes:

Sorry to hear Dolly is lame, but try not to feel too bad. THese things happen with horses, it doesn't mean that you did something wrong. I hope she makes a quick recovery.

Thanks Booboos. I do feel a bit bad. I should have got someone to have a look at her on Sunday, but I honestly thought she was in season with the grumpiness. Poor sod was just trying to tell us something. Well we'll know if there's a next time (hopefully there won't be though!). xxx

Your definitely right about going from Dolly to 14.2 no point getting another for the sake of a few inches, if she's outgrown a 12.2 won't be long till they outgrown a 13.2. My plan is for daughter to stay on pony untill she really can't then get a full up 14.2 that should last , plus at that size if its chunky I can easily ride too so helps in winter and when she's busier at school and friends ect.

Sounds like a good plan. Problem for us is that I'm a chunky monkey and daughter is a skinny minny! Can't see us meeting in the middle somehow!!!

WOW! That's a BIG difference.....I think I'm changing my mind and my plan now!!!!

I've said that daughter is stopping on Dolly until she can use her feet for brakes!! ;)

So tell me.....which pony was the cheekiest? Big one or little one....bet I know.....;)

Hahahaha thank you!!! Does that title come with a badge? And perhaps some paracetamol and valium for mum???

I did think it might have been the stop too!! She really slammed on - never seen one stop so close to the jump before (well have seen them crash into them, but never actually stop!) was literally at the jump - I was 110% sure she was jumping it, as I'm sure daughter was too!!!!

As above, she's still a bit lame today, so she's on box rest for the rest of the week. Then we'll check her at weekend and hope that she's improved and can come back into work. Otherwise it's get the vet out time :(

The little one by far.

He was a complete nutter and would constantly nap, rear and buck. She had an accident out hacking in January and smashed her foot in 5 places. She said she would never hack out again.

Tonight she went for a hack on her own after we went at the weekend. The 14.2 is only 5 but she is a complete sweetheart, she hasnt done much and was turned away in a wood for 6months over winter so she is having fun getting the weight of her.

Just realised it could have something to do with there names too, the 12hh was called Chilli who we used to call Red hot Chilli Pepper and the 14.2 is called Angel lol x

Well ours is "Little Dolly" so I'm not sure the name thing works!!! I sometimes rename her "Little b***er"!

Ouchy on the foot. Hacking accidents always worry me the most. Glad your girl is back on and out hacking again. How lovely that her new pony is helping her get back her confidence. It's amazing isn't it that sometimes the "oldies" are crazy and then you get the "steady" youngsters! I know there's plenty of exceptions, but I suppose it's just how they're all built different!

ps not surprised the smaller pony with the monkey!! :p

oh yes, we had one of these too!! the first time he met OH, he just walked through him and then stood there looking like butter wouldn't melt! :rolleyes:

Glad Daughter is ok R, and hope Dolly is on the mend soon - any more news on what it is?

Thanks! Slightly better today but still lame. Some swelling in one of her legs. Cold hosing and box rest for now.

So I'm thinking she's pulled something.

Going to give her a couple more days rest and see how she is at weekend. If no improvement its time to calk the vet.

Suppose its a little early to expect her to be better....but I am very worried and had hoped it would just vanish : (

with plenty of cold hosing and box rest, it could still take the best part of a week, even if it's a tiny pull of something.... so breathe easy and keep her calories down to fibre and not much else (partly so she doesn't put weight on, and partly so she doesn't get too excitable, and partly to reduce the risk of tying up when she comes sound and back into work).

I'm in two minds whether to recommend any bandaging... on one hand you could be supporting and compressing something that needs it, on the other hand you'd be keeping heat in something that needs keeping cool to avoid swelling... I guess the ideal would be bandaging with an ice pad under it.

We had my horse six years before my mum passed comment on him. She asked me if he was brown. :D
 
Thanks for the advice Jen, definitely something I'll look into. I knew I was hoping for too much too soon. Why doesn't dolly bounce back as quick as daughter did!!!

And welsh d, no problem!!! It helps that I love ponies too!! I've been spending my lunch hours learning about horsey leg injuries, how to spot laminitis and how to check digital pulses. What a geek I am!!! :-)
 
Congratulations to D & D on qualifying, I hope their aches and pains soon improve. With regard to going up in height, my daughter rode her barely 13 hh (she had actually been jumped as a 12.2 a couple of times before we got her), until she was 14 and had her knees up round her chin. As we don't have a very good track record on selling outgrown ponies (11.2 still in the field:p) I said no way was she having a 14.2 so she moved straight on to Murphy who is 15.1 . It took her a little while to get used to horse strides, and to realise that the poor horse couldn't be turned into jumps like the pony, but they soon formed a great partnership and she still has Murph 11 years later (and the 2 ponies).
