I patted my landy for towing my trailer onto the muddy field today while all the boxes where being tractored on. The parking steward chap laughed and patted the bonnet as he walked past too

Approaching a solid non jumpable object whilst having a discussion about steering is a right of passage, you haven't ridden hard enough until you go the way you wanted and the horse went the way it wanted

Over the years, I've stewarded many WH classes for BSPS panel judges, most are lovely and very good with children but one or two can be horrible. I remember one woman who had almost every child in tears. Needless to say she hasn't been invited back to judge at our local agri show. If it was just a local show with any old bod drafted in to judge, half the time they don't know what they're supposed to be looking for.
Have a look at the BSPS rule book, which will make it clear exactly what daughter should be doing and what the judge should be looking for. Ask the secretary if you can look at the sheet at the end of the class, you will be able to see what marks were given for each element of the judging. Bear in mind that WH is the only showing class where you are able to do this.

ps I have NEVER heard anyone hit anything as hard as daughter hit that shed, I nearly jumped the gate myself to get in (couldn't get fat ass over though
) so she can win the tough rider award from me! 
Didn't know that about seeing the marks, what a good idea!
The last BSPS show she went to (and won her class!) she had the most lovely judge in the world!! Such an absolutely lovely lady who had this lovely way of doing a critque sandwich!! She'd start with "what a lovely pony/show/rider" and follow with but perhaps next time I'd like to see "xyz" and end with a proper big pat for the pony (and treat) and a big gushing "you are such a good rider for you age/size etc...." all the kids left smiling. All the mums happy because we had something to work on. Absolutely perfect. When she placed Dolly first, she gave the best comment daughter has ever had before, during or since that show.
"If there had been 100 ponies in this class, I would have placed your pony first" Awwwwwwwwwwww
ps for what it's worth, I've never met a bad steward. And the one at weekend got halfway over to us to help, until she saw I'd got Dolly and daughter was up.

As always, a fantastic update on their brilliant progress (shed or no shed ).
This update has been particularly fun for me to read, as my sister who's 13 is getting her first ever pony tomorrow, and I'm so looking forward to her doing the stuff that your D and Dolly are getting up to together, I'm almost as excited as my sister!

I hope daughter has bounced back from her fall now. My daughter used to do a lot of WH classes and like all showing classes it can depend very much on the judge. Daughter used to ride a very non-flashy pony, who was a cracking jumper but tended to jump at "hunting pace". He generally did well in WH classes, and a couple of real old fashioned type judges absolutely loved him, however every so often you would get a judge who was looking for a show pony that could just about get over a jump and poor old Jack used to be down the line to this sort of judge. Biggest insult was when he jumped clear but was placed behind a pony that had a stop.

I've been trying to think of a saying to do with "shed" to annoy daughter with but they all sound....well......rude to be honest (maybe it's just my bad mind!) - I was thinking instead of going hacking perhaps she can go shedding....you get the idea! But it's not working!

She was VERY sore this morning (not helped at all by the unplanned dismount due to wind
yesterday!!!!) - she's pretty much sore in the perfect position! Ear, shoulder, hip, heel.....(except not in the ear, in the fod instead!) - how did that happen? Did she just adopt a good riding position for her fall??? She tells me she tucked up into a ball, which yes, that is was it looked like - amazes me she has such time to think! Perhaps I should send her jockey training after all!!!Judges are a weird breed aren't they! It would be seriously annoying to be placed behind a refusal wouldn't it! I thought only "clears" went through. I'm really hoping Daughter isn't put off WH classes, as I've been told Dolly would be perfect for it. Poor sod though, I know Dolly didn't know that she was doing a show when she got called back in. She walked away from the judge, trotted back and as daughter turned away, she blasted straight into canter!!!! Dolly obviously thought she knew best. Daughter got her back to trot, did a bit of trot and then did her canter parts, but Dolly did look strong. Her extended canter looked like it was never going to stop!
Perhaps that's why they placed her behind the pony that was bucking and misbehaving. Because she looked strong. But she didn't look out of control or cheeky. Just like she was a lot of pony. Perhaps that is because I know her though. And I think in the 2nd class, well, Daughter and Dolly obviously decided to show the judge what "out of control" looked like

I remember my mare taking advantage of me once. I had washed her in superdopa "Showgleam" - it was a beautiful summer's day, with me in cut down jeans
Mare thought that this was then biggest snake in the world - stuck her head between her front legs, bucked, farted and took off close to warp speed. Don't ask me how - but I stayed with her!!! Every now and then she stood on the tape which jerked her to one side - I couldn't lean forward to get hold of the headstall without committing to coming off...... and we were getting nearer, and nearer to the yard...... the CONCRETE yard with a left or right turn like yours ..... I would go through her ears and may be crunch me two bear legs on the gate on the way through to boot!
Luckily, I was very good at cowboy stuff when younger and even though I was about 35 then - executed a great forward vault and scissored her neck with me legs, grabbing the collar and then reaching for her nose - with my hand over it - she stopped in two strides - in massive cloud of dust!
Injury thus avoided - but two liveries were quietly grooming at one rail and I could feel the disapproval - I later received a letter from the Y.O's about riding ettiquette.
Oh Nooooooooo! I bought a lovely set of English plaited reins from a fellow livery ( quite famous Showjumper actually but won't name drop!) when she had a clear out - £6. They are still fitted to my mare's old Fulmer bridle which hangs in her "shrine" - I have her saddle on a rack in my loft ( it's like a room rather than full of spiders) and is surrounded by piccies and Horsey stuff.
Its heart stopping panic when you bolt towards concrete isnt it! My sis er did it eons ago on my old cob. My mum fainted as he was going so fast, chin in to chest and she could hear my sister crying as she galloped past her.............I was just standing there are well, nothing I could do about it. They did a sliding stop into the fence and she stayed on, just.
It was all her fault though, as she changed him from a dutch gag to a french link to "see what would happen".....
