Daughter may have osteoporosis

Hi All

Hoping for some good ideas to try and keep my daughters spirits up.

Shes 15, and it looks as though she has osteoporosis. This has been brought about by being on medication for epilepsy since she was 5. ( she has now outgrown epilepsy and been off meds for 1 year )

So far specialist believes she has it due to amount of fractures she has had, plus a few other symptoms that tick the box. We are just waiting on a bone density scan to confirm.

The good news is, that they believe with appropriate care by the time shes 22, she will have normal bones.

So, at the moment she is recovering from a fractured T12, so cant ride until end January. But, if its confirmed that she does have an issue, I dont want her to ride until shes fixed. Heaven knows what bone could go next !!

Horses are everything to her, and throughout the last 10 years has been the only thing that has given her any confidence

So, I was thinking of getting her a shetland pony so she could show him/her in hand ??


Wont rush out today and buy a pony, as we will wait for the results, but shes obviously worried and i would love to give her something to think about.

Her horse is a saint, so I have taken the ride, so she doesnt have to worry about selling her.

Sending hugs to your daughter..If your pony is such a saint have you considered about breaking it to harness?.It would be something your daughter and her pony can enjoy together but takes away the risk of having a nasty fall..

Oh dear poor you and poor daughter!

I was diagnosed with the onset of osteoporosis some years ago and have been taking the treatment (one a week tablet and daily calcium and vit D tablets) and am well now. My doctor says the treatment's very effective.

I would think your daughter's age is on her side, as the body will still be good at building bones at her age. As I understand it, with a good diet, plenty of weight-baring exercise and the appropriate medication, she should make a full recovery.
 
sending wishes on a good recovery from her fracture. defo think the inhand showing would be a good idea give her something to join in on with out riding and still the chance of winning :) she could even take her tb inhand in certain classes.

In hand showing sounds like a lovely idea. Would she be able for horse agility with her horse? It would mean she could still get out and about a bit with her.

Just wanted to send hugs to you & your daughter, I have a teenage boy who has just been diagnosed with a life changing condition & another who is starting to show symptoms so I know what you are going through. Fingers crossed those bones make a speedy recovery. xxx

You never think about things like this when you plan start a family do you.
 
Just wanted to say get well soon to your daughter, I'm sure with her being so young it will sort itself out ok.
I'd suggest that if you get her a shettie, she could break him to harness (or better still get one already broken!) and she could do that? Maybe a bit more fun than goundwork?

I think she quite like's the idea of a cute and cuddly shetland, the fun is going to be finding one. I will have a chat with her tonight, and see what she thinks about driving. Thanks

If we do go down that route, I will have to bore you all with the very cute piccies
 
Sounds like you have some great ideas, good luck. Is there some of the trec type stuff that she could do in hand with her current horse? Not something I know much about but I;m sure someone else will know

It really wasnt something i had thought about before, but definitely going to look into this. Her horse is only 8, so in theory if she can get 'fixed' whether thats in a couple of years, or by the time shes 22, her horse will still be a great age for to restart riding again. Thanks x

Hi op, also have this, i still ride and as long as your careful it can be good for her to strengthen bones. Im really tiny because of all my bone problems but I live a fairly normal life, I'm careful in what I ride because of the risks in breaking bones but apart from that I lead a normal life :) don't give up all hope big hugs xxxx
 
Good luck OP. My mum was diagnosed with thinning of the bones due to medication, but with treatment and care things have improved, so I'm sure they will for your daughter.

I would advise not buying a Shetland. If you really want a second equine then the rescues often have unrideable ponies that are not suitable for small children who could be ideal for your daughter's needs. But I don't think you need another, there is no reason why a tb can't do ground work, horse agility, in hand showing it be broken to drive. In fact driving the tb would give your daughter more options than driving a Shetland. She could work towards driving trials with the tb or showing if she takes to it.
