My 10 yr old was riding the 15.2 cob today hes such a lovely boy, I had him on the lunge while she did some work without stirrups and she managed to bouncy bouncy out the side door.

She landed under his front legs while he was trotting and he had to hold his leg up mid trot while she rolled out of the way, he did his best but lost his balance and managed to do a little hop and slithered down her coat missing her.

Such a genuine geniune horse, she was crying as I think she panicked being so close to his legs I then realised he had the reins through his leg too, the boy just stood there with his head pulled down, didn't even panic!

Lovely lovely horse ! xx

A good thing he was so careful with her - bless him.

However please prepare your boy properly if you plan to lunge with a rider on board. Secure the reins by twisting them and feeding the throat latch through them.

Have side reins on so that you can retain full control, make sure that your young rider holds the front of the saddle with her fingertips when working without stirrups, pulling upwards to bring herself firmly into the saddle. MAke sure that she doesn't lean on her hands as this will encourage her to bounce out of the saddle.

You were lucky she wasn't hurt.

When I say lunge I say that very loosely, we were actually out on a hack across our 20 acre field, and I had her on the lunge line as it was very very windy, she was giving all the aids, I wasn't lunging the horse.... She was holding onto the safety strap, the trouble was she was looking behind her nosing at something and totally lost her balance, this is life I am afraid, you ride horses you fall off sometimes.

Is the strap attached to the D's on the saddle or a neck strap? A strap moves too much it's best to use the saddle to hold on to when practising trot without stirrups.

Kind of reminds me of my first fall, I was at a riding school cantering without stirrups and just bounced off :)
Unfortunately for me I injured my cocyx ??? sp??? and have never quite been the same since... :(
Hope shes ok, tell her to look where shes going next time :) :)

So long as she is ok, I can remember coming off as a child like it was yesterday, its a dangerous sport both when your learning and when you can ride, all we can do is provide the safety gear and try ones best.

Bless him for trying to hop skip over her, their not daft are they.

Did she have a BP on?

Hope she ok and back in the saddle when she's ready.

It's the strap that fits between the d's on the front of the saddle, made of nylon, so pretty secure. She's usually very deep seated, was just one of those things really, hes bouncy and she craned herself around to see a buzzard, looking behind and a very bouncy cob she lost all sense of balance. She hopped back up and was fine, lesson learnt tho I think!

He's too big for her really, she only weighs about 4 stone, but hes such a school master,,, you can gallop past him in an open field and he has no inclination to follow suit lol, he really is great for her for confidence, just a long way to fall really. but don't worry I take safey seriously, hence why he was on a lunge line, even tho I know he is so dopey, its never worth risking little person on big horse in open field on a windy day, don't want to be the person saying ohhh he never did that before after he pi55ed off!

thanks for you advice x

Yes and skull cap lol... she was straight back up laughing at him being a big dope, no they aren't dopey they don't want to go treading on people do they, I don't think it knocked her confidence because it wasn't his doing, was her stupid doing! Few weeks ago we were walking along a street and she nosed at some person behind her and walked into a metal box thingy on the wall, there is no hope lol!

Glad to hear your daughter is ok.

I remember my daughter's first fall - I was stood next to the instructor who said to me - "she will look for your reaction to see how she should react" so I just walked over to her, picked her up, dusted her down and said something like 'oh well I suppose you had better get back on!! (I don't know how I managed not to run over and over-react to what, in all fairness, was just one of those things).

So she looked at me, realised that it wasn't the end of the world and got back on.

Since then I have seen many mothers (usually the non-horsey ones) go into total panic and overreaction to simple 'bounce-offs' which have made their children scared to get back on.

Many non-horsey friends were horrified that I let my child take part in 'such a dangerous sport'. But now - 15 years later, they comment on how responsible, grounded and safety concious she is (just don't let her know I said that :) :)... )

HAHA too right, I am the type of mummy who only gives a plaster if the leg is actually dropping off!! She said she felt rubbish for falling off, I told her you ride horses you fall off sooner or later!

very true! i had been riding for 2 years and not fallen off and everyone said that it would happen sooner or later and well it did a couple of weeks ago... im nealry 19 so got into horse riding a bit late really... and i still needed a bit of encouragment to get back on. and wen i did i then fell of again doing exactly the same thing (jumping). and was then not so keen to get back on but did and the last jump i did was the best. falling off is all part of the learning process i guees has made me more aware of the need to concentrate

glad your daughter is OK. my cousin keeps count of the number of falls she has as she has been told that it takes 7 falls to make a good rider...... i hate to see her fall but it always make me smile when she says well thats 5 now only 2 more!!!

HAHA we joked she had 6 more to go!

Thing is I probably have only fallen off what 3-4 times in 25 yrs!!!! BUT saying that I will hunt and hack, I don't do alot of silly stuff lol..had a jumping session on a very very keen horse the other day he jumped a 3 foot fence about 5 foot and catapulted me onto his neck, I didn't fall off,but I did say the minute you start jumping etc you are likely to fall off!!... you rest my case lol xx

yep let me be the example!!:D but in a way im glad it happened as now atleast im not waiting for my first fall. atleast she can take from the experience that he really tried to not hurt her so she might have more confidence in him. he sounds like the cob i mainly ride. genuine horses are so briliant to learn on whatever size! i dont think i would still be riding if it wasnt for ours.

p.s. dont know what my aunty is going to say when my cousin gets to 7 falls!!! ops
