Sorry this should prob. be in Dogs but might get more a response in here!!

My patterdale x whippet was covered on 22nd February and therefore was due last Sunday. Its now Thursday (day 67) and she still hasn't had them although she is showing signs of nesting etc (hiding in the understairs cupboard with the hoover this morning). Its definately not a phantom pregnancy because I can feel the puppies and various pokey parts of their bodies moving. She is desperately depressed being left at home all day (she usually comes everywhere with me but I've left her at home all week in the kitchen in her whelping box - the thought of being at work and her giving birth on the sofa did not fill me with huge enthusiasm - nor my boss!).

I know its her first litter and they are often late but I'm just wondering whether I should take her to the vet's if she hasn't had them by the time I get home or should I just leave her be? It sounds silly but the puppies were concieved on my birthday just after my dad died and it is what would have been my dad's birthday tomorrow so we wondered whether she was holding on to have them on his birthday. Probably a ridiculous thought but a lovely one at that!

Has anyone else's dog been very late to produce and if so could they please let me know because I'm so worried!

My horse is at the vet's today for full lameness work up etc and so I'm a bit on edge all in all!!

That sounds quite normal (from my A+P lectures not experience I hasten to add!!).

Have you had her scanned at any point? Have you warned you SA vet she is due (we liked to know just so we could get all the caesar stuff out and ready - would gaurentee not to be required then, but if we didn't get it out we would need in a emergency. Worked everytime).

I would personaly phone your vet later if she hasn't had them but not take her in if you can avoid it - purely to prevent upsetting her!

Thanks - I think I'll let the vet's know when I pick up Happy. Wish she'd just hurry up though - she is usually a very athletic dog and she can't even play football properly at the moment because she is so fat!!

I don't think it is normal, I mght be wrong (not a breeder) but iirc anything over 66 days needs veterinary attention. I would phone your vet for advice ASAP, rather than rely on us!

She isn't home alone - my neighbour is with her thankfully and has been all week.

Just spoken to the vet who said that most crossbred's produce on Day 66 so if she hasn't had them by this evening to take her in and they will do a scan on her and see what's happening but as long as she is ok within herself and eating etc then not to worry.

Feel very relieved I've spoken to him. Obviously if she hasn't had them by the time I get home then I'll take her straight to the vets.

Good, I'm glad you've spoken to the vet. I hope it all goes well now and that puppies arrive safely and soon
