So my 15yo TB x was diagnosed with cushings 2 weeks ago following a persistent cough which just wouldn't clear up. The vet suspected his immunity was compromised somehow which is why she tested, he didn't have any other symptoms other than being lethargic, and slight fat pads over his eyes.
His appetite has been fine since going onto the prascend, which was what the vet mentioned may be affected, however I have noticed he seems very cross and irritable, especially at feed time. He has always been the sort of horse to make faces when he has his tea and his haylage, but he's being quite aggressive now and kicking out, when before it was always just face ache.
I've read about this prascend 'veil', has anyone any experience of aggression as a side effect and any idea how long I should expect to have to deal with a miserable horse before he starts to pick up?
It's very sad seeing him so unhappy.

Prascend or Pergolide can cause a period of depression for the first week or so of medicine. Your horse should be improving now, if he isn't I should speak to your vet and ask about adjusting the dosage.

This.

He may need to be titrated onto the dose slowly.

Obi is now on 2.5 mg a day and I've never had an issue, but some horses can't cope without introducing the tablets a quarter at a time.

I really urge you to join the yahoo group - their help and advice is invaluable.

It was a good call by your vet BTW - smart lad :D

Well, yesterday was day 10 and last night he actually seemed much happier. I am going on holiday for 2 weeks tonight and I was worried sick about leaving my Mum and my friend to do him in his grumpy state but actually he was way more chilled and hardly put his ears back or pulled faces, so perhaps we are coming out the other side of that particular stage? Fingers crossed he is nice to everyone while I’m away as I’m worried enough about leaving him as it is! The vet thinks a 2 week holiday will do him good and that I'll be able to get back on board and start riding him again when I get back as the respiratory problems seem tons better now. A two week holiday is definitely going to do me good after the last few months! xx

one of the reasons i got my horse tested was that she was becoming a bit grumpy so you may find once he has stabalised on the prascend his mood will get back to normal. 10 days is not long, i think it can take up to 6 weeks for the tablets to kick in properly. have a good holiday and try not to worry about him...
