last night i went out with friends. we had to get the station in a hurry to catch the last train home and there was a 6ft fence between us and getting there. no problem i say! i can scale that. so i did. and mustve landed awkwardly, but there was no pain until an hour after it happened. and to cut a long story short. xray showed no break, so jst badly torn all the ligaments in my foot. cant walk, cant drive, cant work. not good when i'm a self employed single mum. i cant get down to my horse :(((( my friends will take good care of him, but i'm so depressed about it. i cannot sit on my butt all day doing nothing. how the hell will i cope??? luckily my car is automatic and i hurt my left foot, so once the pain has gone a little, which is excrutiating right now, i can at least potter down to see him. so, i will probably be on here a little more than usual to while away the hours. i'm so stupid :((((((

You have all my sympathy!!!
A week past Friday I was just out of a clients house (I am a homecarer to the elderly) when I slipped on a dog turd that his next door neighbours free range dog had deposited at the sde of my car whilst I was making my call.
One leg went east the other I collapsed on and I heard a snap. The owners of offending mutt watched me fall as they were just getting in their car to drive off! I hauled myself to my feet (foot) and slithered round to my door. I drive an Isuzu Trooper which is quite high to get into (I am 5ft nowt) and hauled muself in. I was by this time running on adrenaline and as I was in Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland it also has no signal for mobiles , so crunch by grind I drove the car seven miles to the main road and made it in to Sanquhar to the house of my last client and realised I couldnt even hop to the house so phoned friend, OH then boss to get help as this ankle was swelling rapidly. My boss (caring sort) asked if I couldnt manage to hop in to the house to get the old duck a hot choccie and a hob-nob!
Eeeer what part of I have done myself a nasty dont you quite understand?
Anyways, got home hopped in to house, got rid of turd covered clothing and got a bag of frozen veg onto it. Could wiggle toes so convinced myself that it probably was only soft tissue damage and as the A&E was thirty five miles away I would wait and see if swelling went down. On the Monday as a concession I made a Tuesday appt with our GP. By this time I had vetwrap on it and could get wellies on and hobble around and it was a colourful colour.
Tuesday I hobbled to Doc who hmmmd a bit and said you better have an x ray on this, so I said well unless I drive myself it will have to wait until my OH is on day off tomorrow.
So hobbled into A&E on Wednesday around 2 oclock where to my astonishment and distress the x ray confirmed a spiral fracture of my tibia and also a stress fracture on the same foot which has been plagueing me since last winter!
So with the air full of threats of plates and pins I was sent home with a splint on and a pair of crutches, with instructions to return and see the orthpods who were at the time of my attendance at A&E were in theatre sorting some other poor soul out. I had to book ambulance transport as OH's employers are not the caring kind either and he couldnt get time off to take me.
Well after Friday I was a bit thankful really as the doc with the unpronouncable name said that given that I wasnt a triathlete and didnt use my legs much they would start with a full plaster and NO weight bearing for SIX weeks. No I wouldnt be getting a walking sole, and the only time I was to be vertical was for toilet visits. I had to trade the crutches for a zimmer frame because when I tried to use the crutches I fell off them!! So whilst I can sympathise with you I would trade places with you in a heartbeat!!
If the plaster dosnt work I will have to have a pin and plate job and that will be TWELVE weeks worth of non weight bearing.
My step son is busily searching for a tee shirt that say S**T Happens which does not guarentee his future safety, and whilst the story itself may be very funny, I do not find it at all funny. Lying in bed or on a chair with leg elevated for six weeks when you are unable to even make yourself a cuppa and become reliant on texting the nearest human to make you a cuppa, i will go mad, seriously mad.
However I can officially claim to be a tough nut as walking on a broken leg for five days must make mesome kind of super hero (or negligent idiot)

Firehorse and Frozzy so sorry to hear about your accidents - but can I join your club please? A couple of weeks ago I turned my ankle over whilst walking down the track to my horses field. After having x-rays checked it turned out that I have chipped a peice of bone, as well as torn some ligaments. Thankfully I didn't need a full cast and have an "air cast" on which isn't too bad. Having started off hopping around on 2 crutches, 2 weeks on and I'm now managing with just one crutch so can at least move about and fend for myself a bit, but not taking the dog for a walk and not looking after my horse or riding is making me really grumpy though.

ahhh poor you. i totally understand i am into my 5th week of crutches and i am so fed up can not understand why i am not back in the saddle yet. i have 3 kids and a hubby that works all the time.

i was warming my horse up and we were cantering on one rein think it was right and he fell head first into the school  i flew over the top damaged my shoulder but left foot got stuck in stirrup so got charged across the school. damaged the crap out of my right leg. they have not x rayed but i have been to physio for 2 weeks so far and although there is some improvment it still hurts and i am totally fustrated

Another who feels your pain! I have been on crutches for 10 months now....end only just in sight fkr me too!

Hope you heal quickly!

Arrrgh me too! I hobbled around for a week innpain finally went to a&e and found out I had a broken week! I'm a week and half into hobbling on crutches. No weight bearing for 6-8 wks, horse on full liveru costing a blooming fortune. Just had vet bill for his op 3,300...

huge hugs to you all and loads of healing vibes too

I know what you are going through. I have had 3 lots of surgery on mine and its not fun.

I am now 4 months post replacement ankle joint and I finally 2 1/2 years later have my life back :D

I've done the same thing as you! Torn ligaments in left ankle. Agony when I went over on it, (my rather large Bernese Mountain Dog pulled/tripped me over - I was wearing flipflops). As I lay on the ground, my boyfriend was laughing whilst I was thinking "have I broken something?"

I did this 10 days ago and can walk (ish) but it's been bad timing as it is my 2 weeks off from work (!) and I can't drive so my boyfriend has had to ferry me around everywhere too! I have much sympathy and empathy for you....hope it heals soon! The nurse said it can take anything up to 4 weeks to heal properly?

Everyone at work found it hilarious that my hip fracture was caused by slipping on floor tiles as opposed to falling off my horse. In fact someone even write in a card 'at least it wasn't the horse that did it'. 20 odd years of riding and it's the tiles that get me!

I've been bucked off by my last horse so many times with no broken bones & I can't believe that I chipped a bone just by twisting my ankle, maybe we are all just far better at riding than "everyday life"! Have any of you managed a visit to the stables yet? Who is looking after your horses while you are incapacitated?

what a sad bunch, but intresting that not all of these are horse related hmmmm

you would think there would be more bearing in mind what we are all on

do you know i was thinking the same thing. all the yrs i've spent bouncing about it the saddle, meeting the ground with force and being trodden on and i've only ever had a broken toe and finger. ive had more injuries jst by every day life!

Blimey oReilly
There are a lot of us which is comforting to know!! And very few actually caused by the neds. In fact the reason I work is to pay for the dozen or so Welshies I have. Not one of them has ever hurt me.
Its the isolation that does me. Stuck either lying on bed or lying on the recliner.
I had to resort to texting my daughter to get a cup of tea yesterday and that was 2 pm!! My OH works 50 miles away and leaves home at 4.30 am.
I am so lucky with friends who are looking after my lot and I have no worries that way.
Think I will have to resort to him leaving a flask and sandwiches for me!!
Its being online that saves my sanity!1
Good luck to all fellow hobblers!!

Ouch.

Gentle hugs all round.

Regarding the tea - ask someone to make you a flask of hot water, then you can make your own tea; or can you set up a kettle and a bottle of water next to where you are lying, would that work?

Any broken people within a twenty mile radius of me (middle of the Midlands), just shout - I'm contractless at the moment and make a reasonable cup of tea, plus have a good supply of Hobnobs :D

Oh Frozzy I do sympathise, I only had a few days of being completely helpless, as soon as I could get around with one stick and carry something in the other hand life got much easier, it's not nice having to rely on someone to do every little thing, a flask of tea, plate of sandwiches (and cake!) TV remote control, laptop and mobile all within reach are essential, then when everyone has double checked that you are ok and gone out, you realise you need a hankie! At least we have the internet to solcialise these days.

Please can I join in - not on crutches but smashed up my left arm so now pinned and plated and already mad with boredom! No driving/riding/wash - can't even put a bra on on my own - grrrrrrrrrrrr! Also non-horse related which infuriates me further - slipped on a wet floor! Apparently no riding for 6 months but somehow don't think that's going to happen!

Lots of sympathy to everyone else bored and hurting!

I can join in and again not horse related. I was attacked by a herd of cows over 3 years ago, lucky to be alive, haven't ridden properly since, and after my 3rd op and 2 new ribs and a titanium plate don't think i will be riding this year! have had to sell 1 horse and have a friend riding the other! Can't even walk my dog on my own. Frustrating doesn't cover it, owned horses for all my life and some stupid flaming cows get me!

Hurrah daughter brought a wheelie chair courtesy of the Red Cross !! Lovely people, even tried to get her to take a commode!! I can make it to the loo not too badly but my foot turns purple when I do (dont know if its meant to do that, must ask!)
I will at least get out to the yard to see my ponies and dogs which are kenneled. It might not take too long to wheel chair proof them! We have a driving pony on the yard and one of the girls is toying with the idea of attatching the chair to it!! No chance!!
We have tickets to see Monty at Greenlands next Monday so the girls seem to think because of the chair they are assured front row seats!!! So if anyone is going and you spy me, come and make yourself known to me!!

Ouch.
