Well..my first ever T goes to view a horse, report.
Myself and two friend arranged to meet the seller in the Co Op car park at a local village. As far as I knew this was because he would then guide us to a field somewhere down a muddy lane to view said horse.. No, wrong. We drove into the car park and there it was, being ridden around the car park with large bloke on it's back and trotting it up and down for all it was worth with no saddle and an I'll fitting bit and bridle. He looked just like he did on the photos. Paperwork was presented for inspection.. 28.75% Arab and with lots of unknowns in his line. Couldn't make out what breed anything else was but the paperwork was in very pristine condition. Now that in itself wasn't a problem because a horse is only as good as the animal you are looking at.
I got him to walk him towards me and looked at it's stride. Legs straight and no problems there. Pasterns were maybe a bit upright but angle with the hooves was ok although the hooves themselves were a bit irregular to the outside. I asked him to get off so I could have a look and watched as his poor back sprung up at least two inches.. So no he wasn't sway backed. It was the riders weight. No soreness in back, good. Didn't mind ears and sides being touched. Allowed my friend to lift his front right, ok with that. Back right..no didn't want to play.. I checked his front left leg.. Ran my hands down it and I thought I felt warmth.definitely didnt want his knee prodded either. Back left fetlock looked swollen.. No didn't want that touched either:( while I was checking his fronts one of my friend's commented about him wiping his nose on me whilst the other was starting to gag! Seems he had a severe snot issue and had managed to deposit a large quantity of really yucky snot on my jacket when I wasn't paying attention  both nostrils were pretty bad. His temperament was lovely and his body condition wasn't bad although his skiing was pretty scabby underneath and he had rubbed some hair off around his eyes.. Possibly ringworm..who knows. overall a lovely little horse but I suspect a hefty vet bill might have sorted him. Plus snotty nose was a decider. While all this was going on..surprise surprise.. His phone rang and he told someone that the horse was being viewed so he'd call back if it wasn't sold.

It was all a bit surreal.. Ah, I can hear you say ..what did she expect  Well I've heard about this sort of thing but no, I wasn't expecting it. Horse in car park !
I told David nicely that no I didnt think I could buy him. he asked me to make him an offer but I declined and said I'd think it over. Well he says, "if you don't make your mind up within the hour I'm shipping him off to my friend's in Bham as I don't want him but he will soon be sold anyhow"! We shook hands and left..frantically searching for hand wipes to get rid of the germs:o In summary, lovely little horse but needs lots of TLC and a vetinary check over and treatment. So we went and had coffe and cake..but I still don't know whether I should be laughing or crying  :(:D PS jacket is in washing machine  yuk!

Apparently I managed to look quite knowledgeable :D I did some revision last night lol and a BIG thank you Faracat and others for your advice xx

I'd have been really tempted to give him a low offer just to get the poor thing in a decent home!

Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Yes..was a bit tempted to offer him £50 but I'd have had to isolate him from the other horses until his nose snot issues cleared up.. Uum maybe give him a few days.

One of our shitland x riding school ponies was purchased from a pub carpark. The owner to be was under the same impression as you in that they would be taken to said pony, but there he was stood in the carpark! The pony is barely 10hh and a fully grown adult was riding him about! He is a fantastic pony and one of the most popular.

Poor thing what a shame sounds like he could do with a bit of tlc.

I was looking on dd last night and saw a registered welsh sec b colt for £80 had been shown with sucess, really pretty pony someone will be getting a bargain if he was nearer to me I would be tempted to just go and get him have him cut and rehome in a while.

You could go out with a few hundred ££ and come home with A lorry full of horses and some change left over.
I think it's just having the confidence to take a chance as well. I'm cautious about buying anything generally but I'd rather not have huge vet fees putting him right. There's a field full of coloured horses in the field next to ours. Some are quite nice..if you like clunky short coblets. Think I've found their owner on DD too.

thing is, its often not what you pay for the horse that breaks you. You make a pity buy to give it a decent home as you say but Its what it costs you once you get it home in vet fees to sort out the issues its presenting with then possibly a whole lot more if you're unlucky and the horse has underlying conditions that might need ongoing treatment. You just dont know.

buying out of pity is fine if you have deep pockets if you need to dip in to them.
