In Dec 2011 a 24 yo pony at our yard had a very bad tear to his DDT. He was on box rest for 4 months then allowed short periods of turnout building up to prolonged periods out.

In Oct 2012 he had an ultrasound on the damaged tendon which showed the fibres had knitted back together nicely so the vet declared him sound for ridden work.

My only concern is when he is trotted, he often nods his head like he is lame; but he'll happily gallop round the field like a yearling.

Am I just being overcautious?

I'd be amazed if the injury healed completely in a pony of that age. But as long as he's generally well and happy, I wouldn't be worrying personally.

This is your pony I take it?

Thanks Amymay. I thought that too, but the vet was positive.

He belongs to the yard owner, but I look after him as he's a companion for my WB :)

No, nothing at the moment. He seems happy in himself and does very well for his age. I just always have the niggling thought of his nodding head and that he may be in pain.
