Hi, My 11 YRO gelding has just had surgery to tears in both fore legs of the DDFT sheaths, he has also had his annular ligaments cut as they had thickened. He had changes to the near fore navicular bone so both have been medicated.. Has any-one been in this situation? if so I would love to hear of you experience/outcome.. I am aware that this is a long healing process and that he could NEVER be sound again! Regards Emma x

One of my horses made a full recovery after having her annular ligament cut and came back 100% sound and in full work. Not had experience of DDFT tears though.

Hi,

My boy had simular problems as yours, he had surgery on his NF to clean up the site of a small tear and to cut the annular ligament.

The vet has given him a 60% chance of coming back to full work (eventing). He is currently on box rest, ment to be doing 2 x 20mins hand walking a day but he managed to damage his OH so is on complete box rest. Hoping to be given the all clear to walk in hand again on Friday. He should be on box rest until the end of this month and then be turned away in field until Jan when he can start ridden work at a walk.

Tbh I was dissapointed with only a 60% chance after forking out so much for surgery, I may give him a full year off and bring him back in to work next Aug. He's my baby so I want to give him the best chance possible. I've also put him on global herbs supplements; windgall and tendoneaze, as well as equine america glucosamine + MSM. I don't know if it's helping, but it makes me feel better!

Best of luck with your boy, mines only 11 too :(

Thankyou to both of you for your repies, Mickey is now being walked out in hand, he went nuts today, im so paranoid!! we have also been given a 60% chance of a full recovery, we mainly showjump but like to event too (although we are terrible at it) thankyou for the advice on the herbs/glucosamine etc. I think i will try it too, i am actually willing to try anything as he is my baby as well, lol!! And Charem, i know exactly how you feel, i too was really dissapointed with the 60% chance, fingers crossed for both our boys xxx

My boy is the same out walking, I invested in a chifney which he really respects and I feel less like my life is in danger! I do get some funny looks though from people in the village. They're walking their dogs whilst i'm walking my horse! :)

Charlie had a bit of a set back couple weeks ago, he somehow managed to give himself a fat leg on his NH and then 3 days later on his OH so he had to have 2 weeks complete box rest before resuming walking in hand. Hoping to be able to turn him out in 2 weeks time.

Funny you should mention that Oberon as i've been on their site ALOT since this all happened and I am definately keeping them in mind.

Best of luck with Mickey, I would love to keep in touch as it sounds like our horses are pretty much in the same boat as one another. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss anything.

Never does any harm to discuss a case with Nic from Rockley. She'll tell you straight if she thinks she can help or not. Then you can keep it on the back burner if you're not ready to take that option. Good luck.
