ooh sorry to keep all in suspense! they used the term de-barked... i assumed it was summat to do with voicebox being removed or something? oh god is it not a real thing? maybe he was joking... *hangs head in shame* LOL and ive just taken it completely the wrong way???????????

O.K. have done a bit of research on the net. There is a debarking Op. which involves severing the larynx, so the dog can not longer make a barking noise.

It looks like this Op. is banned in the U.K., but not uncommon in the USA.

It sounds quite barbaric to me, so lets hope it was a joke (not a very funny one), or they meant they had got one of the training devices on the market.

Assuming you must be in the US as it's not allowed here for obvious reasons.

My thoughts? If it was an operation then it's a bloody disgrace! If they don't like the noise of a dog barking then they should have got a quieter pet. You don't get an animal and then surgically modify it to suit your lifestyle.

Someone in our village years ago had there dog de-barked (Well it was that or having him put down)and he just whistled non stop instead. It was a weird sound but the dog was happy as he could carry on neurotically being vocal and the village was happy because they could carry on without the constant barking.
It was a last option by the owners though after trying everything else, the dog had already been passed on from several homes because of it and they loved him dearly. He lived to a great old age

Sorry, still think it's a horrible thing to do and I'm surprised any vet would do it. There have to be better options than this. A bark is a dogs way of communicating and the whistling sound would surely have sounded as weird to the dog as to everyone else only what could the poor sod do about it? I get annoyed with my 3 barking at everything and anything but I'd rather move as a last option than have them de-barked if it upset the neighbours .

Any way re the de-barking, why have a dog if you want to de-bark it.....but stupid really, esp as there is plenty of non surgical devices u can use these days

It's very common here, as is ear cropping. Both disgust me. My friend has a rescued pug from a puppy mill and he gives the most pathetic hoarse bark, almost as if he has a sore throat.

no, im in the uk... im still unsure whether he meant operation or not, but my impression was it was done my operation. the dogs (jack russels) were horrendously yappy, would bark all day and all night, think they wound each other up. still unsure if i agree with it though, i think in some cases where absolutely necessary then yes, but just for the case of just simple annoyance then no... hmm. x x x x

Surely the collar is nicer, and more humane way. Ive 2 rotties, who are gentle lambs but would bark for britain.

The collars worked on them, ive the one that gives them a shock

im not sure its illegal. because if it was i dont think theyd go shouting about it? and dont think the vet would have performed it surely? i dont know much about it to be honest, could be completely wrong. x x x x

As I mentioned before, it is a gross misconduct to perform this op and that means any vet that did perform it would face being struck off - and so lose their livelihood. Strictly speaking its not illegal as in against the law but it is against the 'Codes of Practice' that we all have to abide by so its kind of illegal in a veterinary sense if you know what I mean.
Sadly there are people who are obviously still prepared to do this sort of surgery - they must assume they are unlikely to get caught.

Even if it wasn't illegal it's not something most dog lovers would have done so maybe your neighbours are not dog lovers so don't care whether it's illegal or immoral and don't mind broadcasting what they've done.

Of course we still don't know the full facts as you are not even 100% sure it was an operation the dogs had or the circumstances.

De-barking..
Di-sgusting!

Im sorry Im glad its banned in this country, in the USA they have some funny ideas on animal care - they even rip cats claws out so they dont scag the furniture Im told....
