We have a horse on our yard that has been lame for a few weeks some days being worse than others.
He is sensitive to touch in the pastern area with thickening in that area and on the bulbs of his heels.
The vet came and looked at him yesterday and x rayed him. He showed very SLIGHT changes on the navicular but not enough to cause significant lameness and he is a teenager so its to be expected(according to the vet).
Anyway, the vet thinks that , as he was a very expensive dressage horse, he had shown signs of unlevelness when the changes on the navicular first came about and he thinks they de nerved him. This explains the sensitiveness and the thickening.
It means that as the nerves have grown back the horse is feeling every little soreness as he is used to feeling nothing.
He has advised me to keep him on bute for a month and carry on riding him.
Has anyone else experienced this and do you think he will get less sensitive as he gets used to it?

I was offered de nerving for my old horse because of navicular- I researched the effectiveness and learned that regrowth was a frequent occurrence and the horse would be in more pain because of the regrowth. I suspect this is what the vets mean

I cannot see him getting more comfortable and working through it. It would be an idea to see if you can find out which vet did the de nerving and talk to them about it

He can be de-nerved again if needed. Ive had a couple who were done twice-they cut higher up. Mine were done as a last chance and one has since been put down(owner decision) and the other is fine and field sound three years on. M.

I know of a hunter who had was de-nerved in a foot because of some recurrent problem or other (not got details). He never looked back and is as sound as anything.
