So I've had this for a while.
Taken a break from riding while both horses were broken didn't help, I work in an office so lots of typing.

Being on furlough so no typing hasn't helped. The steroid injection I had just before lock down didn't help.

Im in a lot of pain just normally with it and can wear my splint at night which helps however when I'm riding and at the farm I have no support.

Riding with my splint is a no as it has the metal brace on it.

Do any of you have a recommendation for a support?

My gp is going to send a referral for a hand consultant (third one in three years) to see if they will actually do something this time.

Xrays and MRI's come up clear so they keep discharging me.

It's getting to a point where I can not even lift the kettle in that hand to pour a drink as it hurts so much.

GP wants me to have a arthroscope but again it's up to the consultants and they haven't been wanting to because tests don't show anything.

I had tenosynovitis many years ago and it was incredibly painful. If I moved my thumb I could feel grating in the tendon sheath My doctor threatened me with a plaster cast if I didn't rest it. I had a cortisone injection into the painful area which helped short term. What finally sorted it was visiting a brilliant chap who used faradism. That was electrical stimulation through your muscles. He told me the problem came from my shoulder so that was what he concentrated on. Might be worth trying massage, and possibly chiro as well. Would be my go to if I ever got it again.

Is there a good physio near you who uses shockwave therapy?
I f there is its definitely worth looking into.
I had focused shockwave for hip tendinopathy and the results were amazing.

I've had shock wave therapy when it first happened and again last year. Didn't do anything.

If the pandemic hadn't of happened I would have seen a consultant by now.

I see an Osteopath every three ish months and even she said that there is only so much they can do.
Other than not using my entire left hand I don't know what else to do.

My shoulder isn't causing it, is an a problem with a ligament that runs from my thumb up to my elbow. The tendons inside the sheath are rubbing together.

I'm reading this with interest SC as I have it in both thumbs and I can honestly say that I am not in a particularly brilliant place right now because of it. You have my absolute sympathy and I have no advice at all, just wanted to send you a hug as a fellow sufferer. xxxxxx

Thank you, I have some kt tape on it for now but it's not a long term solution as I can react to the sticky on it.

I had this recently (self diagnosed) and it was really painful I wore the brace nearly 24/7 for about 5 weeks including whilst riding. Yes there was a risk if I fell off but I chose to take it. It’s a lot better now and only hursts if I catch it funny or the horse spooks and it’s jolted. I had two braces one with just one piece of metal to stop the thumb and side if wrist bending and one that was more substantial and had two plates so restricted the wrist more. I generally preferred riding in that. I did alss before I got the second brace bandage my wrist to protect it and restrict movement. Perhaps you could try vetwrap?

That is exactly what I had. It felt like I imagined a broken bone would feel like with the two ends rubbing together. Excruciatingly painful. I could feel the grating if I put my other hand on it. I was extremely sceptical when I saw Mr Fletcher and he said it was tightness in my shoulder causing it but he must have been right as he sorted it.

I have had shoulder surgery in the past to give the thoracic outlet more room as it was too small by removing a rib on that side. My physio exercise after that I still do to make sure my posture stays correct and open as if I let it lax I get numb little finger and ring finger ??

It was one of the first things I got checked by the Osteopath and she said its all good. Did some werid prodding and it didn't change ?‍♀️

I'm glad yours got sorted.

I had it in both wrists. You have my deepest sympathy. I had surgery, both at the same time. I had to be on short term disability through my work and it took six weeks post op for me to make it back to work. I did drive out to St. Louis while on disability. I had to take breaks every 2 hours and I split the journey into 2 days. Good luck.

I used this one mainly for riding.

I started off with this one but it was better for lighter use and I could only get it in beige which got dirty quickly or rather looked grubby.

I use wrist splints sporadically due to pain and use the top ones in the links above with thumb supports and ridden with them too. I've had two Arthroscopies done and an MRI due to wrist and thumb pain but we have never established the cause. I have Fibromyalgia so most stuff gets put down to that which can be a bit unhelpful.

Ooh, hubby is allergic to all of the stickys used in tapes, dressings etc. When I get home I will find out the name of the spray or cream that we use as a barrier to prevent problems (the spray is easier but more expensive).

Ultrasound therapy from a Physio will settle the inflammation. I have had it twice. This, with a combination of very specific strengthening exercises, settled it. You will probably have to pay for private Physio - see an musculo-skeletal specialist

I was diagnosed with the same following a broken wrist. I had the steroid injection, which I had an allergic reaction too. That was not a fun 6 months waiting for the steroid to disperse from my system! I had a splint made by my physio, with was effectively a plastic cast moulded to my arm as it covered my whole wrist, but it had velcro straps so I could take it off to shower etc. I was only allowed to take it off to wash and had to keep it on the rest of the time. I carried on riding whilst wearing it and learn to adapt. I went on to have the release surgery as my specialist didn't think that resting it was doing any good as it was getting so weak. I chose to be awake during the surgery (if you have an operation, I would advise not doing this and go for the general anaesthetic!) and it was day surgery. I was then in a cast for 2 weeks, then released back to physio. It has been fine since and not given me any issues.
