Dead Semen !!

I paid up front for our stallion choice £550,
our mare was scanned numerous times to be sure she was ready for the semen
which then arrived dead,

i was told it was collected fresh the day before,

I really had no faith in the stud owner, and no money left in the kitty for another go ( my vet bill to this point was £1100)

what would you do now??

what could of happened to kill the semen??

Terrible dealings I hope you get some sort of compensation. Was she inseminated by a stud vet/vet or AI centre?
 
There are a number of points. One what did your vet do about it ,did he contact the stallion owner and query the condition of the semen?. How long was the semen in a container? Was it hot weather? Was it still chilled when it arrived ? Did it come from an EU licensed collection center? Have you spoken to the studbook who the stallion is approved by? How did you vet test the motility and did he do a sperm count?
 
The semen was in transite for less than 24hrs, stallion is standing in the uk,
it was still chilled on arrival, and our mare was inseminated first then the small amount left was checked under the microscope, basically there was no movement they were all dead, He checked three slides all were the same.
 
There are a lot of variables on this one.
Firstly occasionally something happens in transit and semen can arrive dead.
Unfortunately it isnt anybodies fault it can and does happen.
In this situation with an English stallion we would have tried to get an extra dose same day delivered or collected from the stud.
Did you check the stallions fertility stats before you paid to use him.
Was the semen checked chilled or had it been warmed at the correct temperature before assessing or was it just carried round in the car and then looked at as it can make a huge differance.
We have one stallion who can look awful when semen is still chilled but when warmed correctly has 85% progressive motility and fantastic fertility.
It doesnt matter if a centre is EU approved or not for semen shipped within England but it should arrive with paperwork telling you all of the collection details ,ie density ,motility how it was extended and the total insemination dose.
I think if the stallion has proven fertility with chilled semen personally there is no reason why they should have given you a refund unless that was there terms, most are on a no foal free return and are under no obligation to return any fees.
There is never any guarantee that a stallion will get a mare in foal on one cycle sorry.
 
I remember looking at the seemingly motionless semen of Demonstrator, when I worked with him over a decade ago. He got plenty of mares in foal that year and in subsequent years. I've known other stallions like this too. Has your mare been scanned since insemination? Sounds like a daft question, but you don't say.
 
I agree with the above. And i have also seen Domonstraters semen. And although not good does get mares in foal. I think you need to ideally find out the reasons why the semen was dead and possibly look at it next time before inseminating the mare, then if there is a problem you can contact the stallion owner then. They may send some more out by same day courier if necessary
 
The motility of the chilled semen used to AI my mare was so poor (less than 20%) that my vet said - you might only need one to get through - but if there is one capable in that batch it will have to be a strong and determined bugger!!

Despite everything - I had already prewarned the stud, 16 days later she scanned in foal (to everyones surprise) and 11 months later I got a beautiful filly foal!
