Does anyone else have one?
My doggie Annie wasn't born deaf, but went deaf at around age 11 (she's 14 this year)
She's learnt hand signals very quickly and actually seems to cope pretty well! She's also gone slightly blind in one eye.

We still have no clue how she went deaf. One day she could hear us, the next morning she couldn't!

Just wondering how you guys cope, if you have one!

Many years ago I got a deaf Dalmatian from an animal rescue, he came with his pal so ended up with 2 dogs.

The second dog was the ears and eyes of the Dalmatian. The Dally was 4 and his companion was 2. The dally was 10 when he died and his pal died a few months later. Six years of a happy dog who lived a life to the full.

The Dally they think became deaf at the age of 3 and had been in the rescue center for several months before he found his friend and then we found him.

Here is a picture although old it does show him with his Springer pal.

My very good freind Annie has a collie/lurcher which has been deaf since birth - it also shadow jumps (crazy dog!). It's almost 5 now but by the time it was five months old it had had at least four homes (my friend found it online as a rescue). Annie has spent an incredible amount of time training this dog and although she still has the "shadow jumping" problem, she has an amazing amount of control over her with "doggy sign language". Been a lot of hard work, though!

Had a deaf from birth EBT for 11 years and did alot of desensitisation training with him as a puppy. He sat and lay down to sign language and would come back when he was allowed to run around the farm if he saw you waving your arms for him. i miss him alot, but its nice to have a dog that can hear you say "leave that bl**dy shoe alone you little ..."

Have seen that an e-collar on a low/buzz setting can work wonders for remote training a deaf dog, but can understand that so many people are conditioned to think that they are evil, that this will not be utilised :(

yeh me!:D Annilusian, your dogs is gorgeous, love the blue eye. I suspect at 11 it's an age related deafness? My old Lab went around the same age.

My BC Swift however, is only 4 and we only discovered last summer she is stone deaf after she won up to Grade6 agility and started to make more mistakes and seemed not to be listening to me. She is amazing, the liklihood is she has been deaf from birth but we didnt realise. This was her back in Dec at a comp.

Oh wow! NeverSayNever, you have a lovely dog :D Sounds like everyone else does too :)

The odd thing is, the cat went deaf only a week or so after (She's an oldie too, 17 this year!)

Here's some recent vids of my woof :)

Sweep is deaf now:( He is 14 this year and his hearing started to go about 2 and half years ago - age related - before that it was tactical spangle deafness......:):D:D:D At home here on the farm he is fine as he knows where he is and if he gets 'lost' can't see me or Max he stands and barks so we can find him (typical spangle the world revolves around him:rolleyes::D) I worry when we go somewhere new but then he tends to stay close to me so its ok:) I just make sure I keep my eye on him:)

The bonus is i get away with eating chocolates and sweets without him noticing as he doesn't hear the wrappers anymore.......;):D:D:D

This is Jessica (shes hunter clipped as she wouldnt let me do her head and legs), she was 15 when she died and went deaf at about 12, and semi blind at 14. I only found out she went deaf when we were on a walk, I went around the corner and after she didnt come, I went to find her to see her running the other way towards the road trying to find me. After almost killing herself she then went on the lead! I would clap if I wanted her attention as didnt know if she could feel it or something. I really miss her :(

My old boy that I lost last year at nearly 16 went deaf when he was about 10/11 years old, it took me a while to realise as he was so good at following my body language, it was only when he nearly got run over by the farmers when I was walking him on their land that I realised he couldn't hear me anymore. He went off lead on walks right to the end, I'd just have to sometimes wait at corners for him to look at me so I could indicate which direction we were going. At night if I shone the torch at him that was his cue to come back to me.

My spaniel Elvis is now 3 and was born deaf. We didn't know when we bought him but had him tested at about 8 months old to confirm. He's been walked off lead since he was a baby and after getting lost a few times, he now sticks to us like glue. We also own his brother who helps a lot and has learnt the command 'where's Elvis?' He's really well behaved and knows lots of hand signals, but it did take a while to house train him  Occasionally, he gets stressed at night in the dark and thinks he has lost us :(

I would defo re-home another deaf puppy without hesitation :)

Our collie x id partially deaf and has maybe been going deaf for the last 2 years? However, it's hard to tell as he's always had selective hearing! he won't now though go in the field with the horses andif he sees cows in the field where wewalk he will turn for home. I think part of it's because he knows he cannot hear them coming and maybe he knows he's not as quick ashe used to be!

He can hear a clap, my dad whistling him and (we just got it) a dog whistle! Part of me thinks he actually has an ear problem and it's not just him getting old and going deaf. he constantly wants his ears rubbing and it was when he started this his hearing started going. The vets have checked him over - treated him for wax build up (didn't work). We have recently been given some steroid drops to put in his ears - this seems to relieve it to an extent. I think in some ways having them deaf since birth would help as you can teach them sign language - when they are old and go deaf it gets tricky!!! lol

yep eddie is deaf now and i think its an age thing. i do worry like at the yard when he does not hear the tractor behind him and the cars on the roads but most of the time he is right by my side. he has started pottering off in the field thou on the way to school and so i have not got the time to get him but i run kids across road and go back for him so he does not have a final destination moment, bless them xx
