A friend of mine is selling her TB gelding. He is so lovely and is a really good looking horse, his only drawback is he doesn't like having his mane pulled and needs to be twitched - and honestly - thats it!!
He is a lovely stamp but my friend needs to get him sold soon as she is having money problems having recently got a new house

I have suggested a dealer but she is worried
a) she will not get anywhere near what he's worth
b) he will go on to a bad home.

I have tried to convince her that we may be able to find a good dealer who will see his potential and not rip her off plus will find him a good home once they have tarted him up and done a bit more with him maybe.

If anyone has any ideas I would be so happy to pass them on to my very sad and deflated friend...

Thanks

what you have to remember with dealers is - its their job, they need a wage out of it! horses ARE a high risk business! i buy and sell a little bit, and people often ask me to pay what the horse is worth. well, theres just no point! in that case, how can i sell for any more? its ok for 3/4 yo with some potential if you can bring them on, or horses needing to be brought into work etc, but the rest - forget it! so yes, you need to accept that you will get a bit below market value BUT thats it, your horse is sold. (dealers dont have any come back when they buy a horse even if it is mis-advertised! trust me, i know!) and if you go to a reputable dealer with a good horse, it will get a good home. us dealers vet homes too, otherwise our reputations suffer and its just not worth it! im sure someone on here will know a reputable dealer, its just that your friend might have to compromise on price! or perhaps include tack etc, all that helps when you have 1st time buyers etc...or perhaps you could put together a piccie portfolio of what horse has done? and include contact nos etc, hope that helps! its helped me sell a few any way

She bought him for just over £3k so could she expect to get £2500 for him now would you say - I know its hard to answer but roughly?

Sorry have I missed something? If he is a nice horse (mane pulling apart and cannot see that as a problem) why not advertise him locally and sell him - your friend will end up paying the dealer at least something to sell him on so why pay a middle man? If money is the problem then I sympathise but using a dealer may not be the most cost efficient way

She needs to sell him quickly and has no time for timewasters etc so we thought it was the best way..
She cant take him anywhere herself and she hasnt got a horsebox.

post some more details, age, height / level of schooling, blemishes / vices / comp record etc, good in traffic / hacks own / company etc. that will give us a better idea of price!
you have to remember this country has a surplus of tb ex racers which exchange hands for just several hundred quid, so he will need to be reasonably schooled to expect 2 1/2 or 3 for him, pref with competition experience. either that or foolproof and bombproof, in which case he should have been sold yesterday! :)

Not everyone that buys from dealers are horrible people out to make money. I bought mine from a dealer and have had her for 5 years now and although dealers have to make money on the horses they aren't all horrible people either. If the dealer i got my horse from was still a dealer i would have suggested him. Some dealers specialise in nice, well mannered horses aswell so would probably give a decent price but still sell for more.
