Hello

I have just bought a horse and been conned into buying it. He is nowhere near the right horse for me with my work etc. I am really gutted as this horse was a lot of money. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a dealers place that takes problem horses to sell on as I really can't keep him at my yard any longer as he is a danger to others. I am willing to cut my losses (although it is a loss of thousands of pounds). If anyone does know of anywhere then please would they let me know.

Many thanks.

Emma

there is a place that advertises every week in the H&H - Halvannastud - looks like a dealing yard - know nothing about them, just seen their advert week after week after week.....

if he's dangerous though - and you've got him insured - could you claim on your insurance as a danger horse and have him pts ?

Which area do you live in? If you bought it from a dealer you may be able to send it back.I feel very sorry for you as this happened to us once and the horse broke my daughters leg.We did part ex it with a dealer and lost thousands but it was the best thing we did and the horse died soon after [had just been turned away to rest at dealers] they then found it had liver disease, we had spent a lot of money with an equine vet centre checking his health but they said he had a bad back and treated that ,which didn't work.
If only they could talk

I live in Oxfordshire, near London. He just keeps bolting off when being led. Have tried him in a Chiffney thinking it will work and he still does it. It makes no difference at all. He has strength and he knows it. He does it a few times a week, but that is enough to cause havoc on the yard with the other horses and oweners and for me to lose confidence in handling him. I am scared stiff to think about taking him to a show in an open space. I have no idea why he does this and he then rears at you when you try to catch him again. I rang the person back who I bought him from (it was a private sale but shes my riding instructor) and told her he was no good she has taken him back to re-sell him only. I am just worried hes not going to sell and then hes going to come back to me and I want to have a back up plan just in case he does as I can't have him on my yard.

Yes I have got him insured, would they still insure him for being a dangerous horse if he was pts?

Thanks for your suggestion. I will have a look.

Emma

Did you buy the horse privately or from a dealer? Even if it was a private sale, you might have some comeback if you have the original advertisement and the horse is not at all as advertised. What area of the country are you in? Someone is bound to know of a dealers yard not too far from you who can help you. If you advertise on www.projecthorses.co.uk and are honest about the horse, you might get someone interested.
Sorry my post crossed with yours!

How long have you had him for? It might be that he is still settling down into his new home - some horses can take quite a while to get used to a new environment and routine. How about a pressure halter rather than a chiffney? You need to do lots of ground work with the halter, but it pays dividends.

Just wait and see if she sells him. Dont panic yet. At least she has taken him back to sell for you. Is she going to sell him for the same price as you paid for him? How long have you had him? Has she offered to help you?

If not TBH once sold I would consider a new instructor

I can't believe you'd put a horse to sleep just because you are not experienced enough to deal with him - don't do it.
Give it time.

i thought the same. i bought my mare for the same reason the person i got her off was gonna have her PTS as she 'wasnt' in foal, she was and had the foal 6 months after i bought her!

Think seansheep thought it must be an absolute nutter, I don't think a vet would pts for this reason and insurance would not pay out.
What is it like to ride, you must have tried it ,was it ok then, what is the horse's history ,how long did your instructress have it.Does she buy to sell ,that makes her a dealer and you may well have a case of being mis-sold a horse

it matters a lot whether your instructor is a private individual or a dealer. if she buys & sells a certain number of horses (and its not a huge number) within the space of a year, then she is calssed a dealer, and needs to abide by the Sale of goods Act (ho ho ho).

Once you have managed to sell on the horse, i would definitely think about looking for a new instructor as well!

Bolting when being led eh????

Well mine would have been put down a long time ago LOL!!

Hose whisperer ?
Two people leading?
Check teeth ?
Check back ?

Honestly - leading problems are nothing - and 99% of the time are due to lack of respect which you need to earn - otherwise its physical and hes trying to tell you something?!

I worked hard at sorting my pony's leading issues out and she and I now know who the boss is and its much happier!

I am sure you are not giving us the whole picture as I cant believe someone would just sell a horse on for the reasons you have given (not least put it down)

Why have you given it back to the instructor to sell on if you feel you have been conned ?

I feel sorry for the horse

Better luck next time though

Guys dont pick on EmmaJane. This is the horse I think that has been posted about a few times that cannot be led as it bolts every time and rears.
Not being funny but I would not be happy with that - she has cleary tried to sort the problem. How happy would you all be with a horse f**king off accross the yard? ?Lets face it it is not safe behaviour!
If you all had a true horse that behaved like that repeatedly I would be interested to see if it knocked your confidence.
Sent it back - yeah to right - the yo refused to have it on the yard anymore as no one could get it in safely.
If you can t even lead the horse how the hell are you meant to get on it to comment on how it rides.
I may be wrong - but this is pretty radical behaviour - and in my eyes not just a lack of experience from EmmaJane.
BTW - If I had a horse like that, that I could not fix, I would have it PTS as it is god damned dangerous behaviour!!!
Rant over- cant believe you guys having a go - I would really like to see how you got on - this has been going on a while now.

what annoys me with these so called instructors/dealers is that you buy a horse on there recommendations the minute it goes wrong they take it back offer to seel it but for less money. WHY!!! if it was worth that much when you bought it why do you have to take less. i had it once paid a lot of money for my daughters horse from a instructor/friend then after 4 weeks i moved it back to my yard that was the deal and it all went wrong big time.(i must add she did not want me to take the horse away from her and would not let me travel it i had to pay her to take it to shows when i was at her yard) i got a well known int sj to ride it and it dumped him straight over the mares head. he was fuming the mare then went on to cause £800 damage to my horsebox resulting in the police being called to close the road while she was offloaded as she was in a terrible state so a vet could be called. the seller said yes i will take it back will sell it for £5k less and £120 a week selling livery. it turned out she was riding it when we had gone home and keeping it straight (other liveries told me after the event) she said it needs a good beating. needless to say the mare never went back and is now very chilled i left her for 18months then put her in foal. we know can not afford another horse for my daughter as this was meant to be THE ONE

I personally would get trading standards involved and insist on you rmoney back, If the horse was falsely advertised. A good dealer woould accept your not suitable and take it back in good faith

Ive got a horse like this..he had been badly treated in the past and sold to lots of homes. He used to barge out of the stable, career off with us hanging on to him and generally be a right thug. Its taken a lot of time and patience but now he is soo much better. Still have to do everything by the book but he can go to shows and we can lead him out easily. Stick with him if he is good in other ways. Its hard tho at a yard...mine are at home so its only me whos getting trampled not other liveries. Cant believe the person didnt tell you what hes like. If he had a history, you should sue the person for lying to you (assuming you asked if he had any vices). If the instructor only sells a couple of horses a year then she would be classed as a dealer. even if it she says she is not. Agree with other posts to change instructor!!

Just a thought but have you tried leading him in a bridle? I had a Welsh Cob who did this everytime he was led anywhere, a bridle worked better than a chiffney and I also used to used a lunge line as after the initial pull to get away from me he would slow down and using the lunge line I could (80% of the time) hold onto him. I was also seen riding him to the field quite a lot as it was the only way I could guarantee he wouldn't run off.

Hello

I am not picking on Emma Jane and I dont think anyone else is on here TBH !

I feel really bad that this is her experience but I have been in the same boat before and know many that have.

My cob used to run off and bolt/barge/charge- she was the most hated horse on the yard and we wre given our marching orders - and it made me feel awful BUT I would not give up NO WAY !! Everyone is different at the end of the day but surely the horse must have been viewed/vetted before buying? If its that bad was it not picked up on with the other owners? Maybe they had doped it at viewings? Has a blood test been done?

I feel bad for the horse as its obviously got a problem somewhere and it needs to be sorted.

And my confidence was dented with my pony - she was a nightmare !! I am afraid to say emmajane hadnt really put much about all the things she has tried to combat the problem so its looks like (from her post) its not that bad and maybe its her lack of experience thats causing a problem and she just wants rid!? (which I am sure she has done everything)

You can do lots of things to sort a horse out with leading - however big they are - and I for one would not let a horse beat me however bad it was to lead UNLESS a vet tells me - it has brain damage and needs to be shot etc .....

A chifney doesnt work on all horses - mine is ok with it but she had no respect - lots and lots of ground work (I mean lots) backing up all the time and holding and water pistol to squirt her if she even walks at the side of me when being lead! She has improved ten fold! a chifney can just annoy some horses and make them worse.

I wouldnt have a horse if I didnt think I could cope with everything it threw at me BUT I do feel bad for EmmaJane - I really do! and hope it gets sorted out!! For horse and Emmajane.

Have you considered sending horse away for a week or two to someone to sort out. I can give you the number of a person I have used for 2 of my horses and many of my friends. All have gone away verging on dangerous and come back well handled and respectful. Even if you do decide to sell you may find you don't loose as much money this way.

Your instructor should have known your riding and stable management ability before selling you a horse - in which case she should not have sold you this horse.

Is your instructor BHS or ABRS qualified? She needs to be reported to their disciplinary committeee.
