dealing with ankle deep mud

Does anyone have any cheap and cheerful ways of dealing with deep cloying mud which barrows have to be wheeled through in the winter . Yard has never really dried out this summer and mud is gathering at a pace. Hard core options have quoted 60 tons at £9 a ton!! thats to do a large area but anty ideas about dealing with creating a reasonable path through mud that wont cost nearly 1K would be appreciated

Whats underneath the mud? Is it a hardcore yard, or just field? If it was hard underneath, I would get it scraped off with a digger or tractor bucket. If it is just field, could you buy a few stable mats, and cut them into pathwide strips, and place them along where people have to walk? Do this on a dry day so the mud packs down underneath.. We have walkways inbetween the two yards that are like this, and they work pretty well.

Old hessian backed carpet will sink slowly into the mud, but provide a reasonable surface on its way down. But don't use rubber backed as it goes slimy.

Thanks for the replies so far.Its just field underneath and got scraped last year only to accumulate again. We have very clay soil in lincolnshire which retains water and then dries concrete hard. Any more suggestions are welcome

Heavy clay here as well so I feel your pain! Hardcore is probably the best long term answer, we tried rubber mats once and they disappeared never to be seen again.

You can sometimes get hardcore cheaper if taken from a road that is being redone. We got some cheaper that way - neighbour is in the building trade so was in the know.
