ONE of Ireland's top three-day event riders, Sherelle Duke, died in a fall while competing at Brockenhurst in Hampshire, England yesterday.
The 28-year-old from Portadown in Armagh was competing in the advanced class when her horse fell over the log at the 'Sunken Road' fence. The rider was pronounced dead after being taken to nearby Southampton Hospital. Her death brings the number of fatalities in this sport to nine in recent years, and that number includes three of Ireland's most experienced competitors.
Duke's passing will cast an enormous shadow over the World Equestrian Games which begin in Aachen, Germany today where an Irish team will line out in the Eventing Championships on Thursday.
