I desperately need a new helmet and boots for horseriding! We're going up to Decathlon tommorow and I'm wondering is their gear alright?
I have £50 to use on a helmet but I've heard that they aren't up to the correct safety standards?
If anyone has any recommendations for any other helmets around/under £50 in any online stores or anything could you tell me?
I've decided to go with cheap schooling boots because I'm not riding regularly until later in the year and I've got birthday and Christmas coming up to get proper ones
 
Sadly they are allowed to sell them. They simply state "suitable for leisure riding" or "only for private riding". The majority of the helmets stocked do not meet the current standards for competition. Sadly neither does the helmet cbmtcts has posted a link to.

The hat needs to be marked to PAS015 - followed by a date. (BS)EN1384 is the old standard now no longer permitted in competition. It doesn't matter is it is marked with another standard as well as the PAS one - but the PAS one has to be there. (Or SNELL etc but decathlon does not stock those hats anyway...)

The CE/89 standard advertised for most of these actually relates to a packaging / logo size standard and has nothing to do with safety at all.

The only hat I can see from their website that meets current standards are the 2 champion ones.

CORRECTED: The hat cbmtcts does say it complies with VG1 but not that it is also kite marked as required. Some venues will accept VG1 + the kitemark but not all. In fairness the website does say check before purchase. The impact protection isn't as high as PAS051 - but Pony Club suggest the use of lightweight helmets for the under 9's because of the neck strength against the weight of the helmet.

Rideaway have the Champion CPX3000 available at £39 in their sale and it meets PAS015. Decathlon also stock the same model but at £45.

Based on pony club hat tagging... not enough! Many people assume as Starcatcher did that if it is on sale in the UK it must meet the current standards.

Individual choice of course and any hat is better than none. But for me I would not - do not want - anything less than the best available protection for me or my daughter.
 
I got a Charles Owen skull cap for £30 with all the new standards. There are some reliable brands with helmets that aren't too expensive if you have a look. Also just personal opinion but decathlon boots really didn't appeal to me when I tried them - again, reliable brands are available for not that much more.
 
Definitely don't buy a decathlon hat. The majority are not up to safety standards (most riding schools/ competitions won't allow them) and the ones that are up to standard are generally cheaper elsewhere. Find your local large-ish tack shop - for me it's robinsons, naylors or goyt mill is just about big enough. I think other areas of the country may have Countrywide and I'm sure there are plenty of other places. Go into the store. Different brands shape very differently and they will not all be a good fit. The store should be able to advise on fit but generally you want it snug all round your head. I find they expand a bit with use. Don't get one without pas 015 - kite marked been 1384 are probably pretty much as safe but I can pretty much guarantee that at some point you will want to do something somewhere that doesn't recognise your hat, and particularly in the sales you can easily get something decent for your budget.
 
Thanks for all the advice! I was stupid and ended up buying one not t having seen most of the posts on this thread! I was sort of forced into buying one as my dad told me that I needed to buy one and basically wouldn't let me get one online! I'm hopefully borrowing a friends one that is up to the correct standard because I wouldn't feel comfortable using a Decathlon one now
