Hello! I'm new, but long time stalker (in the nicest possible way!

)

I haven't ridden properly in about 5 years, and want to restart lessons again as I'm going to be VERY rusty! I had a trial lesson recently that was a bit of a disaster (they tried to give me a lame horse!!) so I'm looking for suggestions from you lovely knowledgeable people!

TBH I'll probably need to start from scratch, but I'd like somewhere where I'm not going to be in with kiddies or could give me a few lunge lessons to begin with

PM me if you'd rather...any help would be much appreciated, I miss riding so!

Nooooo! There has to be! Bloody typical, I finally get enough time and money to start riding again and I'm living somewhere useless!

if your willing to travel there are a few out east and west lothian.

That could be do-able! Don't have a car at the mo which complicates things, but I'm a dab hand with a bus timetable! Sorry if the reply sounded whiny - I didn't mean to, it just came out that way!

tower farm is a good riding school very close to edinburgh city centre i used to ride there before i got my own horse they are a tad on the expensive side but they have good horses and they are qualified, there is whiteloch near macmerry which will be about half an hour away from edinburgh and harelaw stables in longniddry which is more a laid back approach to riding as it is moslty hacking that they do rather than teaching but all these yards use quality horses harelaw is 20 minutes away from edinburgh by train macmerry is easiest to get to by bus or car

I went to Tower Farm but only once... I used to go to Whiteloch Farm which I loved (and I went there by bus so it is do-able). I haven't lived in Edinburgh for a few years though so don't know what they're like now.

personally out of tower or lasswade i would go to tower if i had too, been a livery on both and also worked on both.

houston out at broxburn is pretty good for lessons, bus goes there too.

I asked this same question before of my riding instructor for someone who was looknig to take lessons but didn't have an answer...her reply was tower or lasswade.

Unless you would like taught by disinterested, unqualified teenagers!!

Appin in East Lothian for lessons, Harelaw in East Lothian for hacking - simples!!

Thanks SO much for all the suggestions guys!

One of the places mentioned was the place that tried to give me the lame horse, girl said "He's the only one tacked up"

Needless to say I turned on my heel and promptly left - I may be a novice but even I could tell he was lame!

So won't be going back methinks - but I'll give all the rest a shot!

Much appreciated, biscuits for everyone!

Am I right in thinking that would be the one beginning with L?

Barge pole springs to mind!
My instructor is excellent, not a riding school, but she keeps a few very well schooled horses to give lessons on. Not sure if there is a waiting list at the moment or not. The yard is near South Queensferry, about 15 minutes walk from the nearest bus stop. PM me if you want the number!

I returned to riding over a year ago and tried several places before settling on Houston Farm near Broxburn.

Put it this way if you want to learn to ride properly go to Houston. They are very experienced, friendly and safety concious. Its BHS and ABRS approved. All the staff look like the are actually enjoying their work and have time for their customers unlike the other places mentioned!

Been to Tower and Lasswade and though Tower is the better of the two I didn't feel they were quite as good as Houston Farm. Can't comment on Whiteloch or Appin as not been to them but what put me off Appin is they ask for £30 for a 1 hour group and Houston ask for £20! No contest on the price!

The horses at Houston are a mixture to cover all riding abilities and are ridden by the staff as well and are well schooled. They also love their horses and it actually shows!

When I lived in Edinburgh, I went to Houston and have to say it was super. I had private lessons with Anne at 8am every Tuesday (before Uni) and she was super- also rode a range of horses and she really helped my dressage (ie riding an ex PSG Horse). So Houston gets a thumbs up from me. As someone else above mentioned, all the horses are well cared for and very well schooled.

Thank you so much everyone!

Think I've got a decent shortlist so hopefully I'll find a place I like! Going to try to visit a few before booking any lessons - this weekend's activity might involve a session with a bus timetable or two
