Hi all,

My first ever towing car is coming to the end of its life. I have a freelander (cheap insurance for under 25's) but to be honest I'm pumping money into it like no ones business and it is generally gutless and **** for towing just one horse and even then can be a littlw scary!

I have a very lightweight wessex clubman trailer and need something that could pull two comfortably. Something that is also generally regarded as a reliable make of car too! Little did I realise when I bought the freelander the trouble it would cause........

Depends how much you have to spend sub 5K then a discovery, shogun, trooper , fourtrack, jeep cherokee etc, if you have more then same but newer or mercedes ML or landcruiser.... or you could try a double cab pick up thats what ive towed with in the past, and also very practical for horsey life..

I'd say 5k would be my limit - will be funding through a car loan unfortunately!

I like the look of the shoguns but unsure as to wether long weel base or short wheel base. We used to have a fourtrak years ago which towed well but when not towing was like a tractor!

The car I get will be used for everyday driving so obviously the less pricey to run the better. are all the above cars listed capable weight wise of pulling 2 16hh's? thankyou!

I have an Isuzu Trooper 3.1 Duty SWB. For its size it is quite economical and it tows well. I paid £3000 for it 2 years ago, I think they are considerably cheaper now though.
They are supposed to be pretty reliable, mine has had a few issues but the majority seem ok.

short wheelbase shogun would be great just depends if you need much room in the back
there quite small unless you fold the seats down.. yes all above will tow 2 big horses..

I've just got a Shogun Sport V6 to tow with for £4k. Lovely car but awful mpg so I'm getting it converted to run on LPG which will cut fuel bill by half. None of the cars already mentioned will do better than 25-28mpg (worse when towing) - so you will have to be prepared for higher fuel costs than your Freelander. If you buy something registered before March 2001 then your road tax will be cheaper. If you get something registered between March 2001 and March 2006 then road tax will be £245 a year. If you get anything newer than be prepared to pay £400+ in road tax.

Reliability wise I was warned off Discos because they tend to go wrong, Landcruisers are reliable but if they do go wrong it's in a big way and costs a fortune to fix. I went with the Shogun because they have such a good reputation. They will all feel tractor like compared to your Freelander though, but they need to be a heavy car to tow two horses.
