So, I currently have a disco which I love. OH has started to get into off roading, and wants to do "modifications" to her. I am not happy with this at all. Realistically, I probably only tow half a dozen times a year, but after the last few winters we've had, I like having the 4x4. Lots of country lanes around here.

OH has decided to sell his car, and he was saying he would get another disco, he knows them well, can work on them himself. Parts cheapish to buy etc. he has suggested getting something a bit different now though for me. We often drive to my parents, a 3 hour drive away, and he is thinking comfort, slightly better mpg. Any suggestions? As said, I realistically only tow a few times a year.

Would need to tow 16'1 and 15'3, heavyish cobs.

We have a budget of around £1500.

You would be hard pushed to get a tow vehicle that can tow two heavyish cobs and get good mpg for £1500, sorry. You'll need a towing capacity of at least 2.5 ton. I would suggest a Daihatsu Fourtrak for your needs with goodish mpg but you lose comfort. Mitsubishi Pajero or Shogun would be a good tow car with comfort but the mpg isn't good.

I would also suggest looking for an older shogun, if well looked after they do tend to go on and on. We have two commercial shoguns that we use daily for towing and personally wouldn't have anything else now.
Without towing we can average 35 mpg but ours are new (10 and 12 reg) vehicles.

I'd suggest keeping the disco with its modifications and a towbar for towing, then getting a normal car for the long journeys. I only use my Shogun for towing or snow, I have another car for general driving.
