Decent turnout rugs that don’t break the bank?

My oldie has re-ripped an old repair on his Rhino 200g combo rug and I’ve accepted it’s probably done it’s time now anyway. I’ve had it a good few years and the filling has squished down a bit as they do and I don’t think it’s as warm as it used to be so needs replacing really.

I love my horseware rugs and he spends most of his time in his Rambo liner system but this rug will be more of a spare that I tend to use when the rain is relentless as his Rambo has a detachable neck which I find lets the rain in - so I don’t really want to splash out on another Rambo rug as it won’t be his ‘main’ rug.

I do however want it to be waterproof, fit well and needs to be reasonably tough as his fieldmate likes to grab his rugs with his teeth 🙄

What do people recommend please for half decent turnout rugs that don’t cost a fortune?

I like Gallop Trojan Xtra - has to be this one specifically rather than gallop or gallop Trojan. The xtra are 1200D, tough and I’m really impressed with mine, I have no fill, 50g no neck, and a 200 (or 250 I can’t remember) and have just bought a 100 to replace one of my other brand ones that started leaking. I don’t bother with the neck on no check ones and I only use combos because the neck fitting does let water in

Premier Equine (not quite as good as they used to be but I’ve still not found anything I’m equally happy with in terms of fitting and not letting water in around the same price point) but maybe wait & see if they do a Boxing Day sale if it’s for a spare rug, may as well try and save some money!

If you do go Gallop Trojan deffo get a combo… the design of their old style detachable necks is woeful, apparently the newer ones are better but still wouldn’t trust.

Look out for secondhand Rambos online. I have all mine kitted out in Horseware and they've all been secondhand and still going strong many years later.
I've been scouring marketplace but unfortunately he's a really popular size so I can't find anything

I like shires rugs. They seem to fit different shapes and wrap around the shoulders nicely. I thought they were a similar fit to the old weatherbeeta my old lad had.

To save good rugs from naughty field mates we used to put an old no fill over the top of the 'proper' rug as protection.

That's a good idea, I've been kicking myself that I missed the Black Friday deals but I will look out for Boxing Day sales! 🤓

I used to like Swish but the newer rugs are definitely not as good as they used to be :( So I bought a 0g and 50g Shires Highlanders Plus. Cannot rate them highly enough - liner compatible so with my rug liners I can make everything from 0g to 250g from the same rugs. Even their 0g is waterproof even in the worst of the weather. All for around £80-90 🙌
