There isn't a totally exhaused smiley otherwise I would have used it. Had a day off work yesterday, YO was away doing something exciting and glamorous therefore I mucked out all the stables on the yard - I lost count after about 12, mixture of shavings and straw boxes.

Conclusions?;
Straw is horrid, and it makes me cough and sneeze
Mucking out is tedious, the novelty wore off after the first 6 boxes and I could never do it for a job
I am exhaused today - every muscle hurts
Clearlt I am too old for this
Being a YO must be a lonely old business, i tried talking to the horses but really they aren't great conversationalists

Ah..being YO has to beat being sole groom...
At least YO get to go do 'other' things every once in a while. I used to be sole groom at a private livery yard...it felt like the lonliest job in the world

I could certainly be a YO - but would have to employ someone to do the mucking out.

I can do 6 stables, and a barn in just over an hour. But couldn't possibly do it every day - far to brain numbing for me. Plus I'm essentially very lazy!

Most yard owners I know are so mental, they think the horses answer!!!!

I can see that it would be. The only way I could be a YO is to win the lottery and watch everybody sweeping around me, I have decided

It isn't that I haven't had sole charge of quite big yards before for odd days, but previously there have been a stream of clients or other people about - oh and I was younger and fitter

Ah, yes it's lonely, esp in a sole groom position, but at least you don't have to put up with bickering, annoying, back stabbing collegues! Not that they're all like that of course! But I've found that horsey jobs with teams are just a nightmare. Everyone thinks they can ride better, muckout faster/ better, know more, work harder etc etc.. It's all one big competition to get noticed.
I'm always most happiest when working alone

You can get on with your job without the hassle of other people. You can do it the way you want and set the 'standard'
That said, there's nothing better than working alongside people you really get on with, makes the day faster and funner

Here, here, totally agree. When I was a sole groom I lived in a caravan in the middle of nowhere and never saw anyone apart from the women I worked for and her horrible husband.

I know how you feel

. Im without a groom at the mo ( having shown the last one the door) and am doing all 9 twice a day plus ponio, donkey, goat, hens etc.Ive decided that Im much too old for this lark. Hopefully the new groom arrives next week, hes Russian and speaks no English or Italian

. The near future should be very interesting

. Just think, here they hire blokes who only do the boxes-they spend all day mucking out only

. My new grooms brother, works at a dealing yard near me and does 40 boxes a day!
