i dont do much jumping  but after buying this new horse i wanted to see what he could jump:eek:

http://http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3479/tommyjumping.png

i only ever jump a small log on the ground so was really happy with him happily clearing the water troughs with out any hesatation.

ive got nearly 40 of these large troughs on the farm, so plenty of practice coming up:D

eta.. yep works now!

hoof prints, how did you manage to get my picture up?????

ive put every code in and still couldnt see it:confused:

anyway, ive been looking at jumping these troughs the last couple of months but didnt have the guts but after i jumped it once i couldnt stop:D:D

they arent that tall but are really wide

im happy with my new buy so far:cool:

Sorry, but aren't these essentially de facto "unfixed portables"? Unless they're staked down into the ground, if your horse misjudges and hits the trough, it is likely to rise up underneath him, massively increasing your chance of a rotational fall and serious injury.

If I'm mistaken and they're properly fixed, just ignore me. Nice pic though :)

i would like to see a 600 gallon trough tip over:eek:

anyway all our troughs have posts knocked in around them so they cant move, if for some reason one didnt refill the cows would end up playing with it in the field:rolleyes:

Brave for sure. Not just the horse either. I'd stay well clear of jumping water troughs. The damage they could do if horse hit it would be awful and not just if it is an unfixed fence. But then some people jump barbed wire fences out hunting for the fun of it too. Each to their own.

Knew some people would get upperty over that pic. I used to do that on my old pony over old baths in field. As long as you don't make a habit of it, I think its fine to have a bit of fun!

I don't really see the problem with it. Your own risk whatever you jump. I used to jump troughs [Well, tell a lie, jumped one out in the cattle fields just earlier too!]. No real difference to jumping something else just as solid and wide? If your horse has the ability and you have the guts to, then no reason stopping you. The things I end up having a go jumping, if I photo'd every moment, wouldn't get 'HHO photo approval' either probably!

Fab pic!

How times have changed! We used to jump 'anything' in the past without hardly a care in the world, now it is 'can't do this, or don't do that'. Horses are clever, they ain't gonna bank a trough! If a herd of cows can't budge it, sure as eggs are eggs a horse isn't going to either! There'll be a ban on jumping stone walls next!

OP - looks lovely, fab jump... BUT, how have you got jumping ground ie, not a bog in your cow fields?? Keep enjoying!!

^ This! Incidently...LOVE stone walls ;) Don't have any round here now though, boo! :( Am working on finding as many old hunt fences as I can do out on the hacking routes though!

Fields once you get up on the ridgeway here aren't bad at all round us also! I popped out doing some XC fences earlier and was surprised by the ground :)

I did too, until I learnt about the danger and people who have died doing similar things..

Are you that confident that you would bet your horses life that you could guarantee he wouldn't try and bank it? I've seen horses do some very silly things over the years..

I value my horse and my neck far too much TBH

Times certainly have changed! We used to have a galvanised feeder of around 3ft as part of our local XC course, nobody batted an eyelid at entering, it was just a standard jump - and body protectors were optional :D Never heard or injury to horse or rider.

Yes it's a different world now (although actually I'm only in my mid 30's) but it's just as easy to get splatted by a car. Looks like fun OP, if I hadn't lost my jumping bottle somewhere I'd be joining you :)

Well, firstly if we stopped doing something because we have learnt the dangers of it, we wouldn't do anything!!
Secondly, if I thought a horse would bank a trough (as opposed to refusing it, which is different and acceptable in varying conditions) then I very much doubt we would have got out of walk first before I thought the partnership wouldn't last!
Horses can do silly things, we all know that, but to bank something which is non bankable, and clearly so, is pushing the silly-ness into another league. Brain-dead springs to mind?!?

If it's full, and it's fixed with posts, it's not an issue, is it? Most troughs round here aren't fixed and aren't heavy enough not to tip if a horse hit them hence my previous comments. Asking questions of your horse, jumping wise, is fine in my book, but not if a wrong answer will most likely land them with a broken leg!

Jumping in and out of it, in this case [normally, jumping up, onto it, and then jumping back down off] rather than just over it like a normal oxer, which it essentially is. :)

But why increase the danger when sensible precautions would make it as safe as it can be?! I've got no issues with jumping fixed fences but a water trough on a horse that has been jumped over a small log a few times is pushing your luck and not worth the risk.

To say it isn't bankable is ridiculous as full with water it could look like it had a lid and empty would just look black. I've seen 4* horses bank things they shouldn't so I'm afraid accidents can happen, especially when you aren't used to jumping.

Right it's time to comment.

I brought this horse to hunt this season and before buying it I watched it jump a number of obstickles, he cleared a 5 bar gate a water trough and a hedge.

I have full confidence that he would jump, I'm a novice when it comes to jumping, never had a school to jump in so always just jumped fallen trees/logs.
Yes it was good fun, but I will take all the comments on board because I wouldn't want to hurt myself or horse.

I must add, I've seen some really bad accidents in show jumping with collapsable fences but that's acceptable. Confused.com

What a lovely photo......you both look like you are enjoying it. Have fun on him, after all, they are an expensive hobby.

FGS, why does this forum think they have to police and or health and safety check everything
any poster does!

Well it looks like you've already done it and survived, horse doesn't look like he has any intention of touching it in the pic, carry on having fun!

Used to jump hedges, gates, anything really when i had the pony to do it & omg didnt even have a mobile phone way back then :)
My horse broke its leg turned out in the field, should i stop turning them out :(
Enjoy, looks like fun.

Bloody hell. She is jumping a trough not jumping in to a pond full of crocs !!!!!! If you don't do things because its dangerous then we best not turn our steed out as we would not want it to misjudge the ground and break its leg, but then we should not leave steed in as if it eats its Haynets too quick said steed may get colic and die !!!! We can't take steed to a show because we may crash on the way. Everything u do with horses has potential danger!!! I say enjoy horses coz u don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.
