Decisions on my horses....

Thank you guys for all your imput, WOW what a response!!

Well I had loads of information and ideas to run past the parentals last night - father was actually quite happy to listen, although is argument is if he is to go miles away you may as well sell.
Mother (usually voice of reason) OMG complete flung her hands in the air and lost her sense of humour - If he is going to go on loan she says he may as well be sold *ARGHHHHHHH*
So unless I can find someone to part share him with me ie i do the donkey work, they have all the fun and pay for livery/feed etc then I am left to do the first plan, BD him myself - which of course I dont mind, just means i have to work out who competes where and when and as and when i can afford it - means winston will NOT have the training I would like him to have as I feel snoops education is far more important.

I was really suprised at my mother tho, didnt expect her to throw a hissy fit lol

Berts insurance is at the minimum anyway, but with my BHS membership he will be covered should anything happen (if he escapes etc) as he is no longer ridden. So we will finish paying PP this time.

Yes indeed, he isnt worth any more than i paid for him - although tbh i didnt pay very much for him.
He was bought to sell, because I am always short of cash lol so the idea was to get him out and see the world then sell him on.
But Im crap, ive got too attached..... I think there was part of me when i bought him thinking well, if he does turn out to be special then he could take over from winnie when the time comes - remember Bertie was all set to be PTS back end of last year so I didnt think i would still have 3 horses lol

Anyway, unless someone offers me something I couldnt turn down then yes, he will be going SOB!

YO has said that had I not bought him she would have for her son (the SJer) so he cant be that bad can he

Just catching up on this one too.

I know you love Winnie to bits - this is going to sound hard and it is just my opinion - please take it or leave it.

None of us have the luxury of endless time and money. Both are short and difficult decisions need to be made about prioritisation. At the end of the day you need to be a bit selfish (obviously without compromosing welfare of the horses etc. etc.).

It sounds as though realistically you can't afford to do everything you want to while running two horses.

Snoops is your horse for the future - whatever you want to do with him you should do everything you can to make that happen and do it as well as you possibly can.

Winnie has been an absolute star and a horse of a lifetime, you owe it to him to do your absolute best to ensure he is looked after for the rest of his life. Having said that I think we all tend to fall into the trap of believing that nobody looks after their horses as well or loves them as much as we do.

There is someone out there who will love Winnie to bits for what he can do and not get frustrated with what he can't. Not everyone wants to gallop and jump (although I do find that hard to believe).

In my view you should find someone who you feel confident will do the right thing for Winnie and then move him on (either sale or long term loan).

Putting yourself in the shoes of the new person, it is difficult to bond with a horse when old owners try to hang on and control things. Once you find the right person and have satisfied yourself that they are OK then you need to let go and trust them.

In some ways it is easier to do that if they are a bit further away.

As I said, just my opinion, please ignore if you disagree.

first of all stop talking about age as i'm much older htan you and it's even more depressing!!!!

also - what cheeky girl said seemed a fair point... to event the snoop monster instead of BSJA?? that is unless you've done your memberships?

only because you love eventing, and snoop would also be good @ it. if his paces are as good as you think, the dressage won't be too troublesome @ intro level.

There my thoughts anyway - after all, you're 1/2 responsible for me eventing this year LOL!!!

Snoopy sounds like a keeper (at least until he is worth a fortune!) - I think you'd kick yourself if you sold him now before you can really assess what he is capable of.

Having your horse on your yard but with someone else loaning him can be horrible. They will be uncomfortable as you will always be there, and as much as you try, you will always be "keeping an eye". There are so many emotions tied up in horses, and having to give up full control of your horse's life when he is still on your yard is really hard.

I think I would loan Winnston to someone away from you but close enough so you can visit. If you can find someone who you are happy with, draw up a contract which specifies what the can and cannot do - no galloping, etc. If they really fall for him and it all works out, they will learn to respect his problems and then you might feel confident enough to sell him to them. These people do exist!

I am so pleased you an Bonnie are gonna have a crack this season - looking forward to the Unaff at Tweseldown, I guess that will be our first one - not sure yet.

I quite enjoy SJing lol and now I have a horse I trust 100% although turning is a problem as stated before he is opinionated and drifts badly through his shoulder when hes not concentrating *he just goes ooo jumps lol* but doesnt care which order lol

Fingers x this weekend....eek!

Totally understand what you are saying and Sillymare too, and I know I will find it hard if i dont think somenoe is doing something right wtih my horse i will tell them so. So maybe that wont work

Unfortunately then it looks like I have no option but to put as much as i can in to snoop and anything left into winston - seems a real shame but i have no other option now as parents have said either sell him or keep him (NO LOAN away from the yard) ROck and Hard place spring to mind lol
 
If it was me i would definatly sell Winston without a doubt!!

I was in the same situation as you when i had Trike. He wasn't up to the job that i brought him for due to his problems. I loved him so much that i thought 'oh well i cant afford 2 and i dont want to sell Trike so i will just keep him as a pet'. Well i started to get really frustrated as i couldn't do the things i wanted to do and Trike was costing me loads of money.

Someone pointed out to me that i could sell him and probably be spending less on a horse that i actually enjoyed!!

That made me realise that i could find him a home where someone loved him as much as i did but wasn't bothered about what he could and couldn't do and i could buy something that i enjoyed and that i could compete again.

As you know Trike is now in the best home possible and is very happy and i am over the moon to be competing again on a horse that i am hoping will take me far.

I know you already have Snoop but keeping Winston will seriously start to take toll on your training and competitions with him and you may start to resent that.

Once Winston is gone and you can put your full attention on Snoop you wont even think about Winston. I know that sounds harsh but you wont. Especially if you find him a nice home.

whats the point in paying livery costs etc on a horse you cant really do what you want on when you could be enjoying Snoop and Winston could be getting the attention he deserves from someone else who is not as ambitious.

I hope i dont come across nasty or harsh as thats not intended at all but thats just my opinion and if someone wasn't like that with me i would probably still be in the same dilema (sp).

Making the decision to sell Trike was so hard (until Rambo came along) but it was the best thing i ever done!! Everyone is happy now.
