Deep bedding

I have recently moved my lad to a new yard. We have taken my friends old rubber matting with us but it seems to absorb his wee whereas at our last farm it sort of ran off the matting! He only has a small bed down and has a full muck out everyday but its really starting to smell! Its not so bad at the end of the day when his bed is up and matting can dry out but mucking out is starting to burn my nose hair! He is a quite wet and likes to trample poo into his bed. Do all you experienced deep bedders think it would work for him or would it just all become one bit wet pooy mess?! Opinions and advise welcomed! Thanks

Hi, you haven't said what your using on top of your matting? I have just changed too Easibed which seems to be working for my messy man.
I used to be on Nedz bed but i found i was using on av 2 bags a week as my horse has a party in his stable everynight and i swear invites other horses in there with him...stomping his poop in everynight...however now he's on easibed i find that although his poop is still scattered everywhere it stays on the top and it holds the wee deep, leaving the top dry.
My bed is approx 7" deep but covers the whole stable.
I take the poop out and then skim the top, chucking up against the walls so the remaining poo rolls down but i leave a base down, trying not to disturb it. Pull the bed back down and pat down flat.
I use on av 1 bag every 10 days and take the wet out once a month.
So far Easibed has saved me approx £15 in a month!!!! I always have a dry bed and it saves me time in the morning.
Although it's more expensive than Nedz, i use less whilst still having a deep and dry bed...i won't be using anything else from now on...PS i don't work for them!!!

I've got 2 horses, a gelding and a mare.

Gelding on rubber matting, has been for 2 years. Been on straw for most of that time, shavings for a short time. He's just gone on loan and I've lifted his matting - very dry underneath. He wasn't a particularly wet horse.

Mare on the other hand, I've only had her since June, got her some matting off a friend. She is a VERY wet mare - and was going through loads of straw. I lifted her matting and found a lake underneath after 2 months!

I've done away with her matting now and just have her on a deep straw bed, and I lift the bed daily and let the floor dry out.

Much easier to maintain the bed now.

Sorry forgot he is on shavings, we are only allowed to use this on my yard. I think Gil will probably have a small lake under his matting already

I started a bed for him yesterday and plan to take the wet out once a month. While I am building it up do put fresh on top everyday? Thanks everybody!

i did a winter on easibed and it was the most expensive year for bedding ever!! and the smelliest! free draining yet absorbant? one or other! i would give your boy a really really deep bed, fine shavings or dust at bottomand big flake on top, and take wet patches out about 2 to 3 times a week, as they come up to top! initial cost is more but cheaper in long run. with small beds (with or without matting) the wee just goes everywhere! smelly stable, smelly horse, and rugs that stink so much they become hard to catch!!
