Deep collateral grooves

I was picking out my geldings feet today and the grooves on the side of his frogs are quite deep. He's due for a trim, he's barefoot and has been for the last 18 months. He's overdue for a trim but does a pretty good job of maintaining them.

Not sure why there so deep but they don't bother him? May be a muppet question but thought I better make sure.. Any idea why there so deep? Thanks!
 
It's good news :) it means that his sole is very thick and his pedal bone is suspended high in his foot by strong laminae.
