i wonder if anyone can help my 21 year old boy has injured his deep flexor tendon. he has been for 3 weeks physiotherapy and has just come home so i can continue his treatment.
i have to cold hose at least twice a day along with other exercises.
i have seen somewhere a boot that can be put on leg and a hose pipe attached but cant find one anywhere now i need one!
has anyone any words of advise or any idea where i can get one?

Hi, my mare was diagnosed with this injury last week via MRI scan. She has to have wedge shoes on which after 4 wks drop down to a lower wedge then egg bar shoes. She is confined to bed for 4 wks then can walk round the stable block for 4 wks, the final 4 wks probably more of the same. Not confirmed as yet by the vet. Not been told to cold hose but hers is deep in her hoof so it may be different.

you can buy flexible ice packs which you can bandage on, put a layer of bandage or fybertack next to skin first to stop ice burn! or you can bandage on picnic ice packs. will keep tendon cold for several hours and not waste the water or time, as you would be hosing for hours. change 2 to 4 times a day, the plastic bags which make icecubes are quite flexible and very cheap tho not reusable! hydrotherapy spas are v good if you can afford to leave yuor horse there for a couple of weeks!

I would ice cup the injury. Buy a load of polystyrene cups, fill with water and freeze. When frozen put the cup (open end of course) on the injury and continue to move in a circular motion (to prevent free burns). As the ice melts the polystyrene will get in the way so just start peeling the cup down. Eventually you will have hardly any cup left and the ice will be used up. This usually takes 20 mins but depends on the heat from the injury on how quickly it melts the ice. All yards should ensure that they have ice cups ready for treatment to a horse in the first instance. Ice is better than cold hosing, much more beneficial and targets the area much quicker and easier.
